Exactly. During the NHL draft Mcguire, Button, and Bob Mac all thought it would be a foregone conclusion that Provorov would be in the NHL this year. - PLindbergh31

Is Boyd Gordon and upgrade over VDV? - PLindbergh31
He is good at draws, has been for years. The problem is he gets caved in, even with that
They'll be able to put him out in tough situations. Don't expect much more than that, I'd reckon

If we just go by goal scoring and no other metrics.... White scored 11 last year, how many goals north of that will Wiese be this year? |

Only if you think those "adjustments" are accurate. - Feanor
All it does is remove the first 10 seconds of play and then start from there. Disregard that if you want: he still had no offensive skill and wasn't even this amazing shutdown center. He took a lot of draws in the d zone and was good at winning them. That's not the same as being a good defensive forward. I like my players to have more ability than that. I think a center who can take d zone draws and is good at them is nice...and totally worthless if there isn't more. |

Over the last 7 years he's at about 57%. That is very good. Is he a good PK guy? |

Let's get him to 11 first -- he's only had more than that once
Truthfully, if he is used how I expect him to be used, I will be glad for 11, thrilled with 14 or 15

Adam Hall, part 2
Rather have that than VDV, at least Gordon is good at something - BiggE
My answer is always a firm neither when it comes to crap vs crap. We could do better than either for as much or less. |

First of all, we don't know if he's going to be a regular in the top 12, or an extra forward, or possibly sent to the AHL. So that remains to be seen.
The Flyers, with the way they've been using Giroux, are wearing him down. He is not a big guy, and if they keep using him in that manner, they are going to lessen the number of years he has remaining as a top center, and possibly shortening his career, and it will take a physical toll on him. There could very well be a residual effect, that benefits the Flyers. This is an example of the narrow mindedness of those who rely far too much on analytics. They're team stats anyway. So if Gordon comes in and can take some of those minutes off of Giroux, if could help him be more effective, and make the team better. Heaven forbid if the possession numbers aren't acceptable. It's amazing. |

In terms of faceoffs, Dzone play and PK, yes. VandeVelde has more offensive ability, but they need a better PK guy.
I think it's a short term, stop gap and if Laughton or Cousins show they can handle it, they'll step in. |

Mono's right in that just because you win draws doesn't mean you are good at defense...someone pointed out the truth earlier, as well: the PK scheme needs to be better than it has been, maybe
When I saw him play, he gives good effort. Wins draws, thinks the game OK. Skating was starting to go a little, but probably no worse than White from last year
(frank), I don't know, man. I am trying to tell myself that the fourth line isn't getting caved in next season, but I can't even get there yet because I am still more worried about the third than I want to be

I won't sit here and pretend I've seen or know much about Weise, but he did score more goals than Matt Read last year and will be making 1.2 million less on the cap. Not that this means much, just saying I think if this guy scores 14-15 goals which he appears capable of, its a decent signing at that cost. One poster also mentioned he could very well be picked in the expansion draft too if he has a good year, I can't argue with that. 4 years is at least 1 year more than you'd like, but he is only 27, so its not like its an aging vet. |

Then it's fine. VDV role was pretty much that. So if he's better at it, with less offense so be it. If you are counting on offense from VDV you are in trouble anyway. |

why does someone who isnt good have to be signed to take pressure off of Giroux...I dont think you will find anyone on here that wants Giroux taking more defensive draws |

Yeah I hear you. Gotta hope that Voracek for one has in the 25 goal range next season. Flyers are going to be hurting for offense as presently constructed. |
