In the grand scheme of things, you're not wrong.

It's more the philosophy of giving an acknowledged Bottom 6 guy that much term.

- johndewar

But for a 27 year old it's not much term when you think about it.

Also look back at previous TDL. Guys like Weise are always moved for playoff teams. I have no doubt that if the Flyers would need to they could move him in the future.

That's one of the reasons why FA is risky.

Look, things could workout fine, but why take a risk like this for a 4th liner? These guys are the most replaceable commodities in the sport.

- PhillySportsGuy

Maybe Hextall and the Flyers don't see him as that? Could that be in the equation.

didn't say he wasn't a better player. bottom pair d and 4th line you need to have value and not overpay....PEB value on the 4th line.

guys like weise shouldn't get 2.5 per year imo..

- rinaldo

Agreed -- people are getting defensive, but how many people saw how Weise was used last season? He was getting minutes with Max Patches, Plekanec on the top line

Part of it he earned, part of it was Gallagher was hurt and they had no one else

Credit to him for making the most of it, but if his usage is the same as it is in Montreal, the Flyers will be screwed, and his production in Chicago in a true third-line/fourth-line role is what we should be looking at

I don't think it's a risk. He's the kind of player that brings the same game every year, like clockwork. You can always move a guy like, that even with a couple of years on his deal. You want continuity on a team. You don't want to be signing new role players, year after year.

Hmm, you may want to think about upgrading your sources.

Just sayin.....

The dude is a furious forechecker, and has put up nearly 30 points two years in a row...

What you gonna give a guy like that? 1.25?

- jak521

nearly doesn't = 30....didn't do much at all for the hawks. saw his time decrease to under 10 minutes a game...8 minutes in the playoffs...his career average is give or take a little 10 minutes per game.

I agree, I wasn't much of a Ryan White fan. Weise stats seem to show he will be an upgrade. Would like it more if it was 3 years and not 4, but can't complain too much. Just have to hope that I don't have to watch VDV much longer.

His production cratered in Chicago. But he's a 25-30 point player the last two seasons with most at ES. He's definitely not a replacement 4th.

I really would've preferred shorter term, a better possession player, and more of a middle 6 skill set to use in the bottom 6 though. If this is the worst Hexy can do, it's pretty damn tame though. Can't deny I'm a bit disappointed.

Wiese had 1 point in 15 games with the Blackhawks. Didn't exactly set the world on fire. He's a better player than White is, so it is an upgrade. But they still need a legit scorer.

Yup, because a 15 game sample on a brand new team with new linemates is all you need to write a book on any given player.

I mean people wanted to upgrade the bottom 6. You know what you get for less than 1million......mostly Chris Vandevelde types.

Solid players cost money.

I don't have a problem at all with this deal. I actually think it is a good move. If you look at a lot of the guys they have drafted recently they all seem to have a common trait. They all play a hard nosed game. Some might be more skilled but it seems they all have a little bite to them in some way or another. I think it's part of the identity they are trying to bring. And Weise fits it.

Exactly. I watch a lot of Blackhawks. We all should be praying that he's not that guy, because four years and 2.5 for that...wow

From seeing all the insane deals other teams have been making the past few days and ones I have seen the us make in the past if this is all we do during FA I would be pretty happy

Come on, man -- unless we have significant injuries, he's going to be used like he was in Chicago. He's not getting minutes over a single guy in a healthy Top 6, and that is where his production came from

What are you expecting from him? If you think it's 30 points in third-line usage, he won't

I'd rather bank the $2.5M and give Leier a chance on the 4th line.

I'm sure Weise will age well though

You don't evaluate a player like Weise on the basis of point production. Especially in a small sample size with a new team. Any idea why Chicago traded for him for the stretch run?

Some awful contracts today.

Okposo, Perron, Campbell were solid in their own ways. So many deals for guys who will be in their mid to late 30s though on huge cap hits who have already been shown to be breaking down. Some real disaster deals just got inked.
