Hextall said he tried to re-sign White this morning, "but we had to move on." Weise fills that spot; Gordon is the PK specialist.
Hextall admitted he did not get a scorer but felt he added valuable depth. Money left over in case Provorov or Konecny make the roster

did anyone get Pronger's (the cat) thoughts on the moves? |

Why would you have taken Matthias over Weise? - YuenglingJagr
Basically the same numbers as Wiese last year. Wouldn't have required a 4 year deal to sign him.
Wiese said 10 team were bidding for him right? So the other 9 weren't willing to match or exceed the Flyers offer. So essentially the Flyers won a bidding war for a non essential player. |

Just looking at stats they seem like solid AHL pickups with potential to break through to the NHL. - moylander
good AHL signings. the Phantoms should be a pretty young team this year so its good to see some still young but veteran players signed for them. important to build a winning organization from the minors up |

He's basically-and almost statistically-the same as Adam Hall.
I'm fine with it as a stop gap, but definitely share your concerns. Looking at it more deeply, he's been a very limited guy.
Who knows, maybe they see him as a mentor and glue guy. Hopefully it's a short term, buryable deal - Jsaquella
He is Adam Hall. And I never understood the hagiographic view of him. He took tough zone usage and PK work. And even zone adjusted he was one of the worst possession players on the team. He had a goal against for ratio of 30-70. He scored 6 ES points.
Either have better players or use prospects on the 4th. You will get better results. Flyers use their 4th about as much as the 3rd. |

seriously did you really expect the flyers to be players this year in free agency? they had like 12 million in cap space with schenn Manning and cousins to sign and Hextall wanted to keep 2 million cap space. all we were going to see is depth signings and signings for the Phantoms. Outside of what guys like Perron got I wanted no parts in the 5 to 7 yrs on 30 plus yr old players. the reality is guys like Perron are going to pick the Blues and other contenders over the flyers on short term deals. hextall is still cleaning up the cap issues. I'm fine with building through the draft and supplementing down the road via free agency. - nastyflyergirl
I thought they would add a legit scorer. Was a huge issue last year. Secondary scoring. That hasn't been remotely addressed as of yet. |

If the Flyers were in on any of the big name players, those deals would've been criticized also. |

its weird how players that teams want have interest on July 1st
Maybe theres a reason no one got in a bidding war for Matthias |

Getting involved in a bidding war for a 4th line player is absurd. |

The Weise deal reminds me of the one Talbot signed years ago. It seemed big at first, but still ended up being tradeable. If it comes to that, I'm sure they'll be fine. |

I will agree here.
Unless they are willing to purely draft top 6 talent, eventually they will have to make a deal or overpay someone in FA.
The one thing I dont want to see is them willing to overpay bottom 6 talent but get cheap when it gets to top 6. We shall see.
I am all for patience dont get me wrong, but the amount of dead cap money on the team is being purged. |

Wiese is a better two way player than Matthias, who puts up similar numbers(actually has 1 more point over last two seasons) and better fits the Flyers needs.
Hell the Flyers could have signed Brandon Pirri if they wanted a one dimensional guy that the coach would end up sitting as much as playing |

If you thought they were adding a legit scorer, you haven't been paying any attention to reality.
After re-signing their RFAs, they had about $3.5-$4mm left over. |

Matt Martin just signed the same deal as Wiese. |

I thought adding such a player was a possibility through a trade. I guess it still could be possible. |

It's worrisome. I think that they wanted to free Couturier & Giroux up a bit and help the PK before throwing Laughton, Cousins, etc to the wolves.
I like Weise a good deal better than Gordon, but I'm not going to get into a frenzy over a spare part. |

There's always this talk of "should've signed this player, or that player, etc. It's not first team who makes an offer gets the player. The player has to agree to sign to play for your team obviously. Who knows who the Flyers made offers to, and were turned down by. Can't force a player to play for you. |

That was the only way it was happening. I expected them to pretty much do what they did today. Upgrade the bottom six, help the Phantoms & leave room to be able to wiggle a kid or two onto the roster |

I have no doubt they tried and didn't get the players to pick the flyers. as I said guys taking short term deals are most likely going to take deals from contenders. I'm fine with Weise. sure 3 yrs at 2 would have been better but he is a 28 yo old player who should be moveable if wanted. |

Sorry but I cannot disagree more. I think they shouldve signed some higher potential/skilled bottom 6 people. But none of the proven scorers will be had with a valuable deal. And the secondary scoring was not terrible last year. I suspect it will be better if Laughton improves, the magical 4th line is given less time, and Voracek bounces back |

150K per year or something insignificant. Lots of bad contracts handed out today. Backes, and Lucic are both ridiculous. TB knocked it out of the park with Stamkos and Hedman. Gotta give Yzerman credit. |
