According to EK, Lucic will mentor young players

well, I guess someone needs to show the kids how to act like a whiny douchebag.

- BiggE

he can teach them some of his famous one liners

He's signing a FA deal. This is likely his best offer. Why would another team trade for him unless he significantly improves next season? If another team liked him so much, they could sign him to a bigger deal now
- PhillySportsGuy

At that money and term, I'd prefer to think of him as a replacement for Matt Read than for Ryan White.

No one.

Hopefully a kid with wheels like Leier can beat out VDV and the 4th line could be:

Leier-PEB-Weiss

not only is that an upgrade from last year's 4th, but Leier has been an excellent PKer at every level as well.

- BiggE

I would love to see Leier make the team this season.

You could say that about literally ANY FA.

Three teams wanted him. Flyers got him. Doesnt mean that nobody will ever inquire about him every again.

That's speculation. He could've very well had similar offers, but went with the team that he thought was the best fit. Also doesn't consider that teams needs change over time.

He's obviously an upgrade, but that term
- PhillySportsGuy

Exactly. Productive. But He's not a good possession player....but he did quite well this year, especially in Chicago on that front. He could be a guy that fits our system very well with forechecking and grinding. It's possible he clicks. He kind of a 3/4 tweener, so not really a true 4th guy. The cap hit isn't bad. 4 years is ehhhh but he's not old either. He's still in his peak years for it. So it's a little less bad than initially.

Not thrilled. Not devastated. Just...eh?

It's not gonna get to 80, IMO

It's gonna settle right around here, if I had to guess

- AllInForFlyers

Who knows, a couple months ago, many folks were convinced that it was going down next season.

Weiss is a much better player than CMac. There is a reason that a guy like CMac is in the minors in a 30 team league. He's just not that good.
- BiggE

didn't say he wasn't a better player. bottom pair d and 4th line you need to have value and not overpay....PEB value on the 4th line.

guys like weise shouldn't get 2.5 per year imo..

Has it been officially announced at all? remember , last year we signed Cleary too until he resigned with DET. I'm not doubting it's official but never know?

The dude is a furious forechecker, and has put up nearly 30 points two years in a row...

What you gonna give a guy like that? 1.25?

We are complaining about Weise, 27, on a 4 year deal.

We could have had Neilsen, 32, on a 6 year deal.

Backes, 32, year years.

Do people see some of these deals?

Give it time. Weise won't be the only move Hextall makes.

At least we didn't double Weise's salary, same years, for an older Brouwer who is buoyed up by top 6 usage.

Hmm, you may want to think about upgrading your sources.

In the grand scheme of things, you're not wrong.

It's more the philosophy of giving an acknowledged Bottom 6 guy that much term.

White isn't really an NHL player... he's below-replacement in most respects.

Weise is a borderline 3rd-liner.

I agree.

If Weise could be plugged into that spot, I'd probably feel differently about this deal, but I admit the 4 years would bug me a bit.

That's one of the reasons why FA is risky.

Look, things could workout fine, but why take a risk like this for a 4th liner? These guys are the most replaceable commodities in the sport.
