Some commentators whose opinions I respect have made an observation that both justifies, to an extent, the trade from a Montreal and Nashville perspective while simultaneously pissing me off (for reminding me of why I dislike Therrien as a coach so much).
Given each coach's respective styles/philosophies, Subban and Weber each find themselves in a situation where their strengths will be emphasized and their weaknesses minimized. Weber indisputably plays a style more in tune with Therrien's philosophy (and Bergevin) than does Subban. The same applies to Subban and Laviolette. So, strictly from the point of view of "getting players to fit the system", the trade makes some sense.
However, as a fan, I'm right royally pissed because I think the uptempo Nashville approach is 1000x better than the "old school" Therrien approach. I wish Laviolette was our coach instead of Therrien (to be fair, I'd say that about at least 25 current or recent NHL coaches, but Laviolette is among the ones I like). I caught some of the Poile/Laviolette press conference and Poile expressed exactly what I wish Habs management would: hockey is entertainment. Poile's excitement at furthering the uptempo game with Subban was palpable. The Habs stopped being exciting when Lemaire first coached the team (which, to me, is unfathomable as he was part of one of the most exciting hockey dynasties in the history of the NHL). They've never been able to move very far from that blueprint. Nashville fans are lucky they're not stuck with such an approach. |

Well said. Even Barry Trotz has moved away from that way of thinking |

Trade doesn't make sense for either team.
For Nashville, Weber was the captain, face of the franchise and best player in preds history. With the rise of Josi people see that as the decline of Weber rather than now we have 2 Top 10 dmen. Weber had 3x as many goals as Subban, slightly lower Corsi, more hits, blocks and far less giveaways. There is a reason Weber is always a lock for a top pairing (or 2) dman on Team Canada.
For Montreal, Subban was their best player, loved by fans, a personality (which is good for hockey), flashy, free-wheeling but Montreal is a an old-school franchise and they didn't like the flashiness. Instead of embracing PK (a la Bryce Harper in Washington) they tried to change him.
For those worried about contracts, HOF dmen tend to play at a high level late into their careers (like goalies), see Lidstrom, Pronger, Blake, Niedermayer, Stevens. I wouldn't worry about Weber declining for another 6-8 years.
TLDR: If I am Nashville, I don't trade the best player in franchise history and my captain to get a few years younger. If I am Montreal I don't trade the best player on my team and embrace his personality as a positive for hockey and the Canadiens.

I'd take Ladd in a heartbeat, but I think his price will be too high. They could use his leadership. I have always liked his game. Nothing flashy. He just gets it done. |

agreed, but not at the price is going to be wanting. Poile doesn't usually over pay for free agents |

Agreed but he certainly overpaid all of them... The resigning of goose was a terrible contract too (technically FA) |

Have you seen what these contracts being handed out look like? 2 signings for $575k each are the best you can hope for today. Only other one I woulda been interested in is E staal at 3.5 mil for 3 years and even that is a stretch |
