I was in Panera today, and started wondering why there has been so little info on Breadman's extension. I know that July 1st is the magic date - but zero speculation in years of term which leads me to believe the conversation is not going smooth.

I believe, according to the CBA, they can't start negotiating with him until tomorrow. If the teams stays status quo, I'm hoping this happens: In the next few weeks they sign him to a long deal at about 6 million a year. He plays this year with the team as is. Then next late June they move one of their higher priced guys to make him fit on the cap. Who that is...I don't know. But I think the Hawks will worry about next year....next year. If they don't get him signed...you will see him go the way of Shaw and Saad.

Without hesitation.

Problem is, even if they didn't have Varlamov, it would cost a lot more than just CC to get the deal done.

Ok dont shoot me but... if we think 72 is looking for 6+ million per year for a new deal, do you flip Panarnin for Landeskog?

His cap hit is $5.571 million for another 5 years and I think he's worth it. I'd be surprised if Colorado was shopping this kid.

Would you trade Panarin straight up for one of the few power forwards in this sport?

No. They'd have to take salary back because he's not making 6m now. Also, NO!

An excellent policy.

Especially with the cap what it is and expansion around the corner.

Travic Harmonic was offered one for one to Oilers and they turned it down.

New Jersey doesn't see that much closer to Western Canada....

I see how Tyson Barrie helps the Jets as a now, but you gotta think later on, trouba is gonna be a really really good player.

If the Avs didnt have Varlarmov, would you toss CC for Landeskog? That would be tempting.
- z1990z

HEY!

there's another example of how Crow is really not overpaid.

Varlamov is locked up at 5.9 mil a mere $100,000 per season and 2018-19...what has he won again?
oh...the court case against his battered girl friend.

Surprised Wiercoch never came up since JJ said the Hawks had interest in the past

If the Hawks ink Campbell, and this gets me all excited to say, they are set at defense. No need to spend anymore on the position.

Varlarmov is a damn good netminder and he always seems to play his best games against us. I cant stand Roy and like a previous post brought up, have no idea why the Avs would retain him behind the bench. He comes across as pure acid and Im sure is not the best guy to have working with young players. Maybe there is friction with Roy and Landeskog. If the Habs can turn and trade PK, guess anyone can be moved at this point.

Most definitely would. And if a sweetener is needed, throw in an Icehog not named Schmaltz or Motte and maybe draft picks. I would think the Avalanche would be a team that Crawford would possibly waive for, unless he'd rather not play for Roy. A former elite goalie as your head coach? Either a big plus or a big minus. In the case of Roy, a big minus in my book.

If they've discussed contract w/ Panarin already and he's looking for Tarasenko money ($7.5 mil I believe) it would be easier to think about it, otherwise it's a hard sell. Landeskog would look great next to 19, but few can replace what Panarin brings to the table (and one of the few is already on the team in Kaner)

I don't share the Landeskog love. Nice player but not even close to Panarin. He won Calder with 52 points then got 65 points the following year, then 59 and then 53 last season. No way I give up Panarin to get Landeskog.

I think last year was Josh Morrisey firt pro year with the Manitoba Moose. he's good.
I think Winnipeg knows not to hurray these guys.

Tyson Barrie types are gonna be acquired, no matter if the get better or not.

The game has changed....Josh needs to work on the DZ and I wouyld be surprised if the Jets trade Trouba for real, unless they really are in a bind...so Morrisey will have the time to develop.

If Trouba RFA deal doesn't transpire, watch the rumors start being trouba for Seabrook! (with Dano as the sweetener) gag

Entire different type player.

Just saying. Landey would bring hawks a different aspect.

One can change a game with physicality and a timely goal occasionally and Aretmi can do that with regularity...

Tavares needs a LW also. I could see Landeskog going to the Isle. Colorado would probably want Lee, Strome, Nelson, Ho-Sang or someone of that nature. Just my opinion.

Landeskog reminds me of a young Andrew Ladd. Plays a hard game. Good size. Goes to the tough areas and has a very nice wrister. Has better speed then Ladd too. Panarnin is a fabulous talent, but this pending contract extension has me worried. If he wants crazy money, I think the Hawks will really have to consider moving him for other assets. Dont want to lose 72, but we cannot afford to pay him Tarasenko type money either.

Look back at the Saad deal and nobody expected him to come back at 6 per year. Nobody did. Panarnin is just scratching the surface and he and his agent know that. The kid tossed in 30 in his first year in the NHL. Can he do that without 88 on the other side? Dont know. What we do know is that some team out there will pay him what he wants. Even if its insane money.

Barrie is Nick Leddy lite and already made 3.2 million before his RFA status where he isn't interested in a bridge deal.

Before you even consider it, you have to know Barrie isn't "Saading it" and looking for 5 mil already...
because then you solved little of your Cap and have hole at big right defense...

I meant to mention this:

now that Stamkos is signed is it too early for the Maple Leaf fans to start the 2018 Tavares signing banter?

In order to put this in perspective.....
We should not worry too much about what the starting lineup or line combinations will be on opening night in 2016. In 2014/2015 our opening night bottom 6 included Shaw 18 min, Ben Smith 16min, Kruger 11 min, Bickell 11min, Morin 5min, and Carcillo 4min and 5/6 defense was a very very young TVR 11min, and a Runblad 6min. That team did alright. Our bottom 6 and last D pairing look better than that already.

So this is the workings of a lineup w Rozy and Mash as 7D and 13F:
Panik, Toews, Hoss
Panarin, AA, Kane
Krug, Desi, Schwartz
Motte, Lundberg, ______
Mash

Seab, Keith
Hammer, TVR
Kempny, ______
Rozy

Craw, Darling

That team costs just under $69m, and needs one more F and one more D w $4m to spend to get to $73m cap.

My prediction: They use 3.25-3.5m of that for those two signings, save a few nickels for moves during the season.

The other reason they need to save some nickels: If Breadman reaches his Schedule B performance bonuses this coming year, they're screwed again if they need to carry them forward to next year.

So keep some money in their pocket during the season. Doing well...deadline deal. doing poorly, use it for Panarin bonus.
