I don't disagree NJ got the best player, but I've gotta believe Chiarelli tried to get the best return he could.

This

The alternative is standing pat. Not dealing ebs instead

D man dont come into their own till later. But you don't trade a bonfiDE superstar for potential
- Yeti1181

Right well have fun with waiting for him to figure out corners. On the Oilers. In what is sure to be another basement year.

Read some parts here and there, but when you compared Larsson to Petry did you happen to notice their designated roles? Larsson top pairing shutdown dman, Petry top 4 shutdown dman.

Scoring is not what EDM needs, they need a guy like Larsson whether you like it or not. Larsson is a less physical Hamonic, but he can be when needed. I'm not saying Larsson has equal value, but you apparently weren't gonna get what you thought and draft picks is the last thing EDM needs.

- Devils9503

Actual last thing the Oilers needed: To give away their 2nd best player for a defenseman who doesnt help their (terrible) offense and isnt a sure bet to be an effective top pairing player.

Then you don't make that move for that guy at this point.

Subban and Weber were both traded on the same day... there has to be a way to get either one of those guys if you're going balls out and trading Hall...

You absolutely can't settle for less than a bona-fide Allstar if you're trading one of the top 5 LW in the game.

- jtommyt

So if EDm got Weber it would be better? MTL and NSH didn't want to have a huge whole on defense so they traded a dman for another dman.

What bona-fide RHD was up for trade? And not just throwing names out either.

@leftcoaster

Hall for Seth Jones would have been a better deal by far!!

Hey all you genious Oiler fans that think this was a good deal, why is everyone else from every other team in shock? (or at least 90%+)

Brutal, idiotic trade.

- ifiwasgm

Not everyone thinks it's a good trade . Far from it.
Some might be trying to rationalize it and see big picture though

Andy Stop with the "everyone thinks it's bad so I'm right" nonsense.

This is where The conversations gets skewed

I don't know if there's just a fundamental misunderstanding here, but yaks and larsson have nowhere near the same value. There is no scenario where a deal gets done with those two

And furthermore, how can we assume nuge or ebs gets it done? I suppose it's possible chiarelli like nuge more cause he's a center, but I find it pretty hard to believe hall was shopped "first"

- Ihateallofu

Well that's why I said Yak +, meaning Edm would have to add in order to make the trade work. I agree though that it's hard to believe that Hall would have been shopped before exploring options with the other guys but that just makes it seem like Chiarelli isn't very good at negotiating. You don't lose an asset like Hall for unknown potential in Larson.

I think a lot of people will agree that it would have been better to wait and trade Hall one for one for a more proven D like Hamonic. Perhaps if they had waited a few hours, maybe the Islanders would have done that knowing that Stamkos wasn't going to sign with them.

In this instance? To pull off this trade? Absolutely.
- jtommyt

And a year from now if the Oilers are a much improved team, make a significant jump in the standings, it will just be blind luck, and nothing to do with making this deal? Because people on the interwebs are the better experts on anything and everything when compared to people who do something for a living?

If they get Demers and Lucic, I see no reason why they are not a playoff team.

I think you're wrong, rarely is there an all-star for all-star trade in the league...the Oilers need to make changes, which are hard to accept for some. This is one of those instances! Larsson makes the Oilers a better team....period.

All the offense in the world and they're still second last in the league, if they went into next year with the same poop defence they'd finish bottom five again. That has to stop.

Larsson is a 3 who can and will improve. Sekera is a 2-3. Klefbom is a 2-3 that could be a 1 soon. I see no problem here aside from not having more coming back. Got the right player, but at too much cost.

Montreal screwed up worse than Edmonton. Webers age for the remaining years of his contract...31-40.

It would've been more fair, for sure. But for me Jones isn't head and shoulders better than Larsson.

Larsson crunches some tough minutes.

There are many saying he could have gotten more if Hall had been shipped around. I think he rushed this through to get Lucic done.

Why is that far fetched?
McD is gonna be a stud. Maybe excising their 2nd best player kicks everyone in the ass. The D is still suspect even adding Demers. It all depends on Talbot and players like McD staying healthy. But I could certainly see it happening. Low seed, yes, but it will only get better (worse). This will be the new destination ala LeBron in the NBA.

Larsson. 23 years old, 6'3", 205 lbs. 274 games of NHL regular season experience. Just scratching the surface of his potential & a year & a 1/2 from being fully developed. Has never been deployed in an offensive role. Finished 18th for all Dman in the NHL last year in hits, so much for not good in the corners, 24th for blocked shots by all Dman in the NHL, 45th for TOI/GP by NHL Dman in the entire NHL. Great skater, solid transitional Dman, with great size, just starting to put it all together.

If I were an Edmonton fan I thank my lucky stars NJ was even willing to move this type of asset,.

Can't wait for most of you to choke on your Red Bull; your to young to drink legally, when Larsson helps Edmonton make the playoffs.

Great blog by the way. I'm speechless...the Pressure on Larson will be unbearable. Maybe it's the MacTavish influence?

Baffled because I could have seen RNH or Eberle in this trade but Hall is the Heart and Sole of the rebuild. Set the Franchise back 10 years

- Colbyboy

They still have McDavid and Puljujarvi coming up. The new reign.

How is their offense terrible? McDAvid, Eberle, Dra, RNH, Yak, and Pul. You have all the offense you need, it's your coach that can't get the best out of them.

Larsson will be more then effective believe me.

The Kings probably would have traded you Muzzin for Taylor Hall. The Kings were offering Lucic 3 years at $6M. Hall has 4 years remaining at 6 million. Solves the Kings defensive protection issues next offseason and fills the LW void left with Lucic's departure.

You better believe that should larsson stand tall as a solid top pairing guy, the trade still won't get its due.
Buddy will have to become a true stud 1 for years before the haters ever admit that maybe chiarelli knew what he was doing

I'm not implying I agree with chiarelli as at face value it's very worrisome, but don't bet this trade will get any credit regardless of what happens next year

Chiarelli did say way back, that it doesn't matter what you gave away, as long as you made your team better...
