One last question on this. There has been some talk about a possible sign-and-trade, as the Lighting were the only team that could offer him eight years. It sounds like he's staying, but the way today is going, I'm not ruling anything out just yet...
- Carol Schram

wow! hadn't thought of that.

however, if that was the case, i would tend to think that the cap hit would be higher. 8.5 is very, very reasonable.

Don't forget the Habs got (frank)ed big time too. Big losses for Canada today.

Apparently the eight-year option is only available if he re-signs while he's still under contract (ie. no later than tomorrow). So that's one reason.

I believe he met with Leafs brass yesterday. I guess that was the only option he was really considering, and he didn't hear enough to convince him to take the bait.

Thanks for the clarification. That makes much more sense, then.

Oh, and as far as Toronto goes, I guess maybe he doesn't shop at Canadian Tire

That big thud you just heard was Bob McKenzie and the entire TSN Staff and Maple Leaf Nation all fainting at once.

I don't think that trade makes the Habs any worse. It doesn't make them better, but their real problems lie with their horrid forward situation

That;s correct. The only team that can offer an 8 year deal is the one he is currently with and it is a one time thing.

I think long term that trade is going to be worse for the Habs then the Hall trade is for the Oil (long term). And that is really saying something.

I don't really think it can be over-stated how much Weber's game has fallen off in the last couple of years and how bad his contract is. Weber from 35-40 @8M AAV is going to be a massive cap nightmare.

EDM Will be a tough team to play against this season. It will be interesting how JB reacts.

i've been a MASSIVE weber fan but you're right. it could be injuries catching up to him or perhaps he needs a new team to revitalize his game (glass half full).

but there were lots of games when he wasn't the best dman on the preds. scary going forward.

No he got fined for tampering with Subban because Subban wasn't on the market, apparently.
- A_SteamingLombardi

I know, but I heard that you could meet with free agents in the "window" but couldn't discuss money and term.

According to General Fanager Weber is due an $8MM signing bonus in a couple of days. So that's something to consider.

Also, isn't Weber's contract similar to Luongo's in that the teams split proportionately benefits of the cap circumvention gained by the back-diving actual salary?

Say he decides to throw in the towel after 2-3 seasons in MTL. Anyone have any idea how much of a cap hit does Nashville have to take each year thereafter?

The Hall trade freed up the $ to facilitate that signing.
