Actually, he didn't, apparently the tax situation in Florida is much more favourable; hence, he won't really be leaving any money on the table (or little if at all) - Zogg
What was it that made him change his mind Toronto's Mayor or the Canadian Tire CEO? |

One last question on this. There has been some talk about a possible sign-and-trade, as the Lighting were the only team that could offer him eight years. It sounds like he's staying, but the way today is going, I'm not ruling anything out just yet...

Which fan base is more upset right now:
Edmonton(Hall)
Toronto(Stamkos)
Montreal(Subban)
Vancouver(Lucic still available) - fiveandagame
Holding my breath to know that its not a sign and trade before I start rubbing it into those entitled Maple Leaf fan faces.... |

Damn, Hall was the only one who I would have NOT traded. - Beatle_john
Exactly trade that lazy bum Eberle

How quickly is he allowed to be traded after signing? Immediately? |

You are probably right because he was probably only considering a couple other teams along with Tampa.
Although I think there would be other US teams with similar tax situations that could pay him more total. Chances are Stamkos wasn't interested in those teams tho (or they weren't interested in him). |

It's still a stupid trade for Montreal in my Opinion.
Suban's contract is sooooo much better than Weber's
27 years old with 6 years left
vs
30 years old with 8 years left. - classic321
hey i don't understand why people dislike subban. i would have never done that deal if i was mtl.
just saying that it always felt like there was something more going on between subban and bergevin. |

good point, Carol - based on the crazy events today, I wouldn't rule anything out. In particular, why wouldn't Stamkos at least see what the offers were out there? basically doing his due diligence? |

Apparently the eight-year option is only available if he re-signs while he's still under contract (ie. no later than tomorrow). So that's one reason.
I believe he met with Leafs brass yesterday. I guess that was the only option he was really considering, and he didn't hear enough to convince him to take the bait. |

this has all the footprints of the Roy trade dynamic - there has to be more to this. Why make what is essentially a lateral move? (although as some have pointed out, Subban has the better contract/term and is younger and bit more dynamic) |

when the talk turned to the declining canadian dollar and the innovative ways the leafs wanted to pay stamkos, the player knew he would be staying in tampa bay.
