All I can say is that Bergevin is a lying mofo and he owes Benning an apology and the Canucks $50K. - Rocket_Launcher

trade in a vacuum sucks.
the oilers' pr will spin it as "lucic, demers and larsson for hall."
the oilers are improved short term and if they improve enough to be playoff contenders, chiarelli is betting people will forget about the hall trade or at least quiet down about it. - RealityChecker
They probably will and a lot of dummies will be stupid enough to eat that poop up. But most people know that the trade itself did happen in a vacuum and that the Oil should have had more coming their way in a deal involving Hall/Larsson. |

love it. It's like those "how to become Canadian" google searches.
Yeah, I don't get it. |

i don't think it's a matter of "kicking in."
just a pitch that he would play for "canada's team" (puke but you know they probably said that) and that he would be the national spokesperson for canadian tire for x million (or whatever the going rate for a top spokesman.)
canadian tire would up probably spend the majority of their advertising budget around him.
let's not forget that toronto is the 5th or 6th biggest tv market in north america. they have a lot of money to throw around. it's not great from a western canadian perspective but it is nonetheless true. - RealityChecker
Yeah, I get all that.
I was just wondering if the Leafs said something like "In order to give us the cap space to make our team better around you, would you be willing to sign for, say $7 million a season." (example $$ only) "You won't be losing money, because Canadian Tire is here to pledge that they'll spend xxx on an endorsement deal - enough to cover the difference between what you'd make here vs. TB and the tax differential, with a cherry on top."
In exchange, if the number was big enough, maybe Cdn Tire would also ask for exclusive rights to his likeness, so he wouldn't also be pitching SportChek, Tim Horton's and whatever else?
I feel like, with the Leafs inviting them to the table, Cdn Tire's role had to be bigger than just a standard (albeit substantial) sponsorship agreement. |

Yeah you sure called me out. Good thing Marwood has internet tough guys like you here to keep him safe.
But in truth you didn't call poop out, even if it makes you feel tough saying that. I fully admitted the Oil were one of my teams and had recently passed the Habs in terms of my interest in the last few years. I also said that after I started spending more time in the Oil thread that I changed my 'fav team' away from the Habs but also that I removed it because low-level vagrants like you and sensnucksnocups (among others) seem unable to participate in the conversation at hand and choose to devolve the discussion to a 5th grade level of "my team is better than yours" which I am not interested in. - RonPielep

i understand the skepticism but i don't think the leafs would be a team to low ball the biggest ufa signing by trying to circumvent the cap. i'd think they'd offer him 10+m rather than go through the shenanigans.
but weirder things have happened in this league so who knows...
back to your original point: i'd love to know what was said in that pitch. |

I like how the Devils do business. Too bad they play for New Jersey.
Does the Subban trade signal the start of a rebuild in Montreal? Subban and Weber are not similar players. Montreal's offensive scheme was centred around Subban's talents. |

But why Hall? He was the least of their problems. They had that 1-2 punch of hall/ mcdavid that so many teams would covet. I don't get it.
If the GM of my team pulled that trade (moving hall) I think I would give up watching NHL hockey. |

Perhaps, my biggest question is why was Bergeron so desperate to move Subban? Was the he that bad in the dressing room? It would be interesting to hear a Habs fans perspective |

Yeah. I'm sure the Toronto media will do some digging once they get over the shock of having lost out.
Whatever it was, it wasn't enough to get the Lightning to sweeten their offer. I believe 8.5 x 8 is the deal that has been rumoured to be on the table for months.
