Schenn already did the deal Hertl got.

I think Hertl is better than Schenn though. He's not a player I want to part with so easily. He's closer to Couturier than Schenn.

That sounds wonderful, but I think it's a bad move by Wilson. Hertl is a gem and should be a part of their core. Sound good now but in 2 years time, he could be getting a big raise. Should've signed him long term for something that will seem cheap in a few years.

On some occasions, it's the player that wants a shorter deal, and isn't willing to sign a longer term. Can't always blame the GM. Don't know if that's the case here, but it is a possibility.

We also tried out Trevor Van Riemsdyk. There wasn't room for him on our stacked defense, but he was able to squeeze into Chicago's joke of a defense.

He was at both the Flyers' and Ottawa's development camps that year (2012).

With TVR, the issue was that he wasn't AHL-ready yet and was a collegiate, not CHL defenseman, so they couldn't sign him and slide the deal. He'd have had to give up his NCAA eligibility if he signed an ELC then. Plus, due to his college commitments, he was unavailable for camp in September.... which ended up being canceled anyway because of the lockout.

regarding TVR, I believe he was still going back to college the two summers he came to camp (I think he was there twice but could be remembering wrong) and can't blame him for choosing Chicago when he did leave college.

adam larsson is a good young D but this is a poor trade

They traded a bonafide 24 year old 1LW for an OK second pairing 23 year old d man. Larsson still has top prospect shine, but he has not shown anything remotely close to being a top pairing guy.

This is Luke Schenn for JVR, with a better Luke Schenn and a better JVR. Chiarelli just screwed the pooch big time. Edmonton blew a serious forward asset. Maybe their best.
