However, there is a difference between cost to resign with the team you are already playing for an open market value. If Toews or Kane hit the open market they would be getting 14 or 15M offers hypothetically.

when I say i cant see him getting less, I mean in regards to it being 2016, he is the first huge 26yo UFA to hit the market... many teams are sure to offer more than 10.5 ...stuff like that

I seriously doubt Toronto's will be the highest $ offer. I'm not sure it behoves a player to be the highest paid player in the league playing in Toronto, either. It pretty simply comes down to whether Stammer wants to come home, imo.

Marchand is a UFA next season as well and could go from 5 to near 8-9M I bet.

In 2018, Carey Price is a UFA already making 7M. Tavares already makes 6M and even James Neal is already making 5M. I can see them guys all getting BIG upgrades.

You disagreed based on the AAV of the proposed deal.

The problem is that the actual cap hit of the deal is NOT the way they calculate the salary for compensation purposes.

So, while you are correct that the deal pays him less than 9 million, the calculation for compensation purposes does come out to over 9 million


and Boston would have to give up 4 picks.

The reason Boston would go that high, apparently, is that they don't have their own picks to give for any offer below the 9 million threshold.
