Subban is NOT a good defenceman. He can't do what Byfuglien and Burns do, because he doesn't have the hockey IQ.
He's $9M per and is a complete tire fire.
He'll be really happy with the raise he just got moving from the highest taxed city to play in to one of the lowest.
Webber on the other hand will lose a ton of dough though.
Webber will be fine and give them 5 or 6 really good years before his play goes over the hill. They will do what any other team does with a contract like that; find someone to take it.
This is still a steal for Montreal to me, I guess only time will tell. - InSutterWeTrust
Big buff has as much defensive IQ as edm has fans who like the Hall trade ....if I'm up one goal in the third big buff ice time is 0:00 ....id rather have Pat (frank)ing Seiloff on the ice instead ...oh wait ... |

Todd you realize Martin is a checker right? The less his line has possession the more they can forcheck the other team into the boards. - Ned_Wrecks
You realize if you don't have the puck you can't win games right? |

I feel like we could change the name in the title to David Clarkson and have a Leafs blog from a few years ago. Everyone should avoid big contracts for 4th liners. - stonehead
Didn't clarkson score 30 goals one year ? Matt Martin has 42 in his whole career |

I couldn't care less about a 4th line's corsi. I'd rather have a guy like Martin on the 4th line that plays a similar style to Bouma, but that actually has an NHL level foot speed. |

I get it, but that's not really the way the NHL is heading. Having 4 lines that can drive possession is probably a better alternative. If the other team never has the puck in your zone then they will have a hell of a time winning games against you.

Awe, dude.....no , just no. Five to six really good years? How about two good years, two average, and then a buyout. Nashville is loving that they got out of that contact. PK is definitely not an elite defensive dman, but his offence greatly outweighs his D liabilities. - dr_soiledpants
Wasn't that the last bad contract before the most recent CBA?
They are stuck for years. Maybe not a buyout after 2, but at some point it will happen. It is known. |

TSN was saying that if he retires before the contract expires that it would be the Preds that are stuck with the recapture cost, so I guess that could be a silver lining for Montreal fans....albeit a very thin one
Edit:
I think the Preds can thank the Flyers for that (frank) up of a contract if memory serves me right |

Martin can play higher up in the lineup in a pinch. Used his size well and looked noticeable when he played us this year atleast.

After four years, but ya, it's inevitable. He's still a great dman, but he took a step back last year. |

If your checkers are regularly getting scored on, they're not very effective players... no matter how the hits are tracked. |

Wow! He still has some gas in the tank. Nash wins this deal all day long!
But by what you say Gio is basically done... |

Some, yes, but not another 10 years. Gio played his best hockey the list two years, weber's best are behind him. Can't really compare the two. |

The best thing about Gio is he went overseas, played smaller minutes when back, and only recently anchored. Kind of like Jose Bautista. |

Has the hardest shot in the NHL as of the last time they all got together and recorded shots.
He looked great last year. The Habs won't sit on failure, gotta respect that.

He will decline but everyone is so quick to look at a guy around 30 and just assume they have to get crappier at that point - Redmile247
It has nothing to do with his age. His play is noticeably worse over the past 2 seasons. The stats show it, and watching him you can see him visibly slowing down... |

Nobody is assuming anything, he is on the decline. He's still a really good dman, but his best years are behind him. Being picked for team Canada doesn't mean poop. They also picked Keith and vlasic... |
