Here's a thought ?!?! What if the Shanaplan consists of signing both Stammer and Johnny T ??? Or is that wishful thinking ? If Stammer signs here, he'd be one hell of a pitchman to Tavares !! I'm getting greedy eh ?

I believe most of the idea behind him paying ontario taxes is due to him owning several residences in ontario. I guess the thing we don't know is if they are actually owned in his name. Could very well have the houses under his parents name or something, and he gifts them the money to pay for them. He just gets to visit and stay in them exclusively for x number of days a year.

I am not an accountant, but that's the kind of thing I would be working out with them if possible.

I'm pretty sure when people report that he built a custom mansion in Aurora, that it's probably not his parents' pad.

Besides, he lives in Canada for 2 months out of the year, which can be proven by Gary Roberts' twitter, which automatically makes him subject to taxes as a Canadian citizen, even if he lives in a motel 6.

I find it kind of funny that all of a sudden so many people are experts on tax laws and whether a player decides to play in a city based on the state or provincial income tax... probably the same people that couldn't file a return without turbo tax.

I think that any gift over $10,000 would be subject to taxes though. It would certainly get the attention of the CRA...

there are no taxes on cash gifts in canada, no matter the amount.

No.

Owning property in Canada doesn’t automatically deem you a resident.

2 months a year doesn’t automatically make him a resident. The test is 183 days.

There are other ways the CRA can deem him to be a resident. I expect that he was able to afford the advice of a tax professional. Some simple planning could have kept his Canadian taxes relatively low during his time in tampa.

i have no idea, but the ownership could be in his parents name, and they list it as secondary residence ( they don't live there). He then visits for x number of days and stays in the residence, returning to the States via Detroit/Buffalo every once in a while to break up the consecutive days spent in Canada.

Michalek? Also, IF Lupul is healthy he can produce. It's not like he didn't produce when he was healthy. Also, Bozak? The lineup won't look like this.

As I mentioned in the other blog, the one thing the leafs can offer that other team can, is post career money. No other alumni of any NHL teams make as much as leafs alumni have.

All of this tax talk is forgetting one major component....Stamkos does NOT get taxed like a 40 hour a week employee.

Stamkos is a corporation. At some level. His real estate holdings, himself personally, in some way he is sheltered by corporate tax laws.

For all we know his accountant has him completely structured as a corporation at the top allowing for all sorts of different deductions, property ownership deductions, expenses....blah, blah, blah.

There was an article posted months ago that explain exactly the tax issue being negligible between Tampa and Toronto.

It's a different level of wealth people.

Mitt Romney had to expose he pays only 10% tax. It's this type of accounting practice that keeps the wealthy, wealthy.

Also and if anything at all, wealthy people will pay themselves through their corporations a middle class, taxable income per year to keep it all legal.

FOR THE LAST TIME, THERE IS NO TAX ISSUE WITH STAMKOS SIGNING IN TORONTO. None that would make a squirt of piss difference to how many houses, suits or cars he buys and gifts to his 3rd cousin in PEI.

His decision will not be based on taxes. Money, perhaps, but not the tax ramifications. There are way too many ways around it.

Michalek doesn't have to play in the NHL, neither does Lupul. Bozie traded (presumably).

As the days go by without the Leafs trading/dumping guys like Bernier/Bozak/Lupul for cap space, the more I think a sign/trade is possible..

also, what a steal for Jones. I guess their GM isn't as dumb.....nah..

Bernier wont be moved until his bonus is paid on July 1st.

His overall career has got to be a consideration.

It really all comes down to how badly does he want to play for the Leafs. I don't expect the Leafs to have the highest offer on the table, so I guess we will find out.

No way. His management company is way too smart. He is a resident of Florida and therefore doesn't pay Ontario or Federal taxes as a non-resident.

I do believe that article showing what 10 (or 12) million equates to in after-tax income is a pile of crap.

I expect he will be. He might even be on the top 2 lines if they want to protect the kids.

Lupul - Bozak/Kadri - JVR
Marner - Matthews - Nylander
Michalek - Kadri/Bozak -Komarov
Greening - Brown - Soshnikov

Hyman, Kapanen sub-ing back and forth from Marlies
