Nice write up and good read as ever. Honestly it is going to be a wait and see with Stamkos. Not holding my breath here he signs with Toronto but if he does hey good for us.

Rychel I liked picking up and think he could be a very interesting young piece. Be interesting to see just how fired up he comes ito camp, and how intent he is to earn that spot up instead of in the AHL.

Still think bodies are going to have to move and could prove interesting there in just what comes back.

And can say a game watched from the press box was AWESOME as a kid but that was the Gardens not the ACC!

Babcock likes a poop disturber on every line....I don't know who would do it, but the 1st line needs one

I think the Leafs can spin the CDN dollar as an advantage.

They offer 7 years at 10 million per

Front load as much as possible, say a signing bonus of 20 mil (not sure if CBA allows)

20 mil USD = 26 mil CDN

Getting paid USD and living in Canada would be a good thing for an UFA

Yes taxes are higher than FLA but 30% exchange up front can cushion that blow

In the March 22nd article from the Hockey Writers, see following quote:

Worse yet, these aren’t four of the forwards you’d protect. Brandon Dubinsky, Nick Foligno, David Clarkson and Scott Hartnell all have NMCs. That leaves only three forward spaces with which to protect Brandon Saad, Boone Jenner, Alexander Wennberg, Cam Atkinson, William Karlsson, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Sonny Milano and Kerby Rychel.

I am not convinced that Rychel could have been protected by CBJ.

It's entirely possible that Stamkos has been paying Ontario/Canadian taxes this entire time

So every one has a Boner over Rychel? How many have actually watched him play? I'm thinking he's in the Marlies to start the year.

Not really a deciding point in this situation: Read excerpt from Leaf Nation article of June 28th

From there, regardless of what type of Green Card status he lies under, it's very likely that he's paying US taxes as well, based on the weighted 183-day rule. But even if he's getting out of Tampa Bay for just enough days to avoid having to pay up to the IRS as well, that's still not a concern he has with a Canadian team.

What we're establishing here is that there's a good chance that Stamkos pays both Canadian and US taxes, as a Canadian citizen and resident who spends enough time in the United States to have residency for tax purposes there as well. It is worth noting that the US-Canada Tax Convention has a specific section on Athletes, though it doesn't apply in "respect of an employment with a team which participates in a league with regularly scheduled games in both Contracting States".

As a few have pointed out since publishing, this wouldn't be a straight up double taxation; the above convention ensures he'd be able to file to the IRS for a credit given his Canadian residency. But it does ensure that his base payment is Canadian.

With this, Tampa Bay's advantage would go away. Suddenly, Canadian teams have the playing field re-leveled for them, as they'd offer Stamkos the ability to pay his usual local tax on his home games, while swapping the road games that would have affected him with the "tax-free" Tampa Bay appearances, lowering his travelling jock tax.

I have a bit of a chub over acquiring a promising young player in exchange for one that was going to be put on waivers, even if he does start the year in the AHL. Is that weird?

Agree, trading essentially a 5th rounder or less for a 6'1" LW drafted 19th overall that was not given an opportunity does not seem like too bad a deal. Has upside and adds grit to the lineup. I like his upside more than a 5th rounder.

Why get rid of Andy Frost? Anyone heard of why they let him go and who will replace him. His voice is iconic with the ACC.

Someone gotta replace Fratten. I don't think Ottawa will loan him this year to the Marlies.

Doesn’t take away from it being a smart trade though.
