If the Leafs have not compensated or pressured Sportchek, even if they went out there looking for the opportunity ... that might not be against the CBA.

the NHL would actually have to prove that it was a back room deal

also.. the marketing revenue from having stamkos in toronto might just be enough to have the NHL heads look the other way

MLSE goes to a company like Sportchek and says they want to sign Stamkos and it would really help if Sportcheck let it be known they would offer him a significant sponsorship deal if he played in Canada... the whole point being to just get the offer from Sportcheck out there to sway Stamkos' decision.

It doesn't seem legit. Pretty sure no businesses affiliated with the team can offer an endorsement as part of getting the player signed.

If the Leafs' corporate structure gives them some kind of loophole, it'll be the first time excess bureaucracy was actually beneficial... But it's also the kind of thing the NHL might close up and punish retroactively.
