Naw, that isn't the loophole.

Wedgie and I had this discussion last week. He posted up the relevant parts of the CBA.

It is pretty clear that the Leafs can't offer any sort of deals with any affiliated or associated company. I don't even think they could broker a deal unless they could show that the deal was not being given to Stamkos for some favor or consideration from MLSE.

Suffice to say it is murky water and circumvention in this regard is really not all that easy.

The one thing that rings true about the whole McCown blurb is the deal having been vetted by the league. The League has broad-stroke power to label something as cap circumvention. The Leafs would HAVE to make sure that is acceptable before they proceed.

i would imagine that the MLSE has friends who own unassociated businesses that would do it for them... some deal where MLSE pays them to do it such as investing heavily in their stock

Might not even be MLSE. Could be a Rogers or Bell affiliate. There are certainly ways around it. Lou does whatever he wants

Not nearly as easy as you guys make it sound.

There are loopholes in this area, sort of, because they can't possibly close off all the loopholes without infringing on the rights of the player to go out an negotiate their own deal. For example, you can't ban all arrangements with any business that does business with MLSE.

What I am not sure of is whether or not a deal could be brokered by MLSE for Stamkos.

In some situations there is also a limit to how much the deal can be for. Stamkos can't mysteriously come up with a 5.5 million dollar endorsement deal for Bob's Home Hardware for example.

wtf?

Is been banned a bunch of times by that Dallas ref, who had it out for me... Was probably him that gave me that ban, too, but from what I understand, being a repeat offender here makes your bans automatically longer.

And then that account got cell phone locked, so it's just sitting around on the database waiting to one day be reactivated.

Poor glucker.

I got banned for a year, and lost my original account because I was trying to get a thread onto the next page after somebody broke the one we were on.

The thing that makes the Bob McCown thing seem false is that it came from Bob McCown.

Well, I can't speak to the blatant circumvention like you describe above. That is expressly not allowed. Whether or not it happens... I am sure there's lots of stuff going on we don't know about.

I am talking about figuring out a grey area where, even when the whole arrangement is fully out in the open, there is no violation of the CBA.

Dude, how could you piss off the Dallas ref? I mean I understand the Habs/Oilers/Canucks/Blackhawks and Leafs refs banning us, but the Dallas ref?

See, now that is interesting.

If the Leafs have not compensated or pressured Sportchek, even if they went out there looking for the opportunity ... that might not be against the CBA.

Like I said, they can't possible cut off all possible endorsement opportunities.
