Had we let Vanek walk, we'd have Myers, Magnus Paajarvi (or Kassian), Taylor Hall or Seguin, and RNH. We'd have a hell of a time bottoming out with the latter two on the roster. I'd bet those two get us a few more wins in 13-14 and 14-15. Maybe we draft Bennett or Drats. Maybe we finish 27th in 2015, which gives us the rights to McDavid. Lots of what ifs.

Not a personal attack, but I've heard this from a few before, the whole "We should have walked away from Vanek" thing, and it stinks. Ultimate armchair QB. The fact of the matter was that we had already lost Briere, and Drury. Vanek was on the rise, and if Darcy let him go, Buffalo would have been burnt to the ground. We had to match, and EDM knew it. If Golisano opened his wallet, and signed 1 of the 2, then Vanek could have absolutely walked.
