They liked Couturier. They got him signed.

I agree with you point if I am rereading it correctly.

If they liked Schenn so much and thought he would be a great player in the future then a deal would be done

- J35Bacher

I look at everything as consistent patterns. First it was, we think you could be core and like how you are progressing. Second it was, show us what you got. He played a better 2nd half of the season.

Some players don't get signed right away because teams have to do clean up and free up space. Flyers are not in that situation. Now they are in the situation where they have to go by the book so they don't lose an asset until they can make something happen. Someone needs to compromise or they need to find another team willing to pay what Schenn wants. If it goes to arbitration then the chance of Schenn getting traded increases. The same steps have occurred with other players in the past, the majority of the time they are traded, play 1 more year and become an UFA.

I bookmarked the page. Would be better if everyone would guess the contract. Those who refuse to give specifics and play around in the gray area to play devils advocate on every issue be damned.

Man, you know how that works; people don't even like to be wrong on guesses around here

That would be on him if he signed or didn't.

Just a thought.

I know probably far fetched but is Schenn a possible OS target?

- J35Bacher

I think Winnipeg would decline the match, and a "separate" trade would follow.

No. "No control" is when you give a player a multi-year deal at a number you don't like when you can take him to arbitration and win.

This is not Filip Forsberg we're talking about. Brayden Schenn is not going to win an arbitration case where he asks for more than $5 million. It's not gonna happen -- it will not happen

All this hand-wringing -- the numbers aren't there! You cannot be afraid of these players and using the CBA!

- AllInForFlyers

It's not being afraid of the CBA.

But you also prefer not to have an independent 3rd party decide on the numbers.

what does this mean?

one year of scoring 59 points makes you a legitimate top 6 forward? since when? i remember a guy scoring 21 points in 19 playoff games one year, having 53 points the following season, and subsequently getting a 6 year deal worth an AAV of 4.5 million.

his name was Ville Leino. yea he was 26 when he came here, and his 53 point season came two years after schenn, but it sets a precedence. do you think the sabres regret shelling out that money after only one good year?

- sjk540

You're comparing 2 completely different situations. Ville Leino failed in Detroit, had a dominant playoffs followed by 1 solid season of production with line mates he meshed well with. He left to a rebuilding Sabres team where he couldn't live up to expectations.

Schenn has been home grown from the AHL up for the last 5 years. His development has been steady. How is this any way comparable to Ville Leino's time in Philly? The risk he doesn't live up to expectations? That can happen with any player in any season.

Cap started in 2005. Let's use deals signed then!
- MJL

Please do. I'm sure there is a metric to compare deals signed then with deals signed today.

2005 cap was 39 million
2016 cap said to be 73 million

Almost double.

Having problems finding cap hits for players during those years. Is there a new site for cap hits?

Nikolai Zherdev had a 54-point season his first full NHL year.
Claude Giroux had a 47-point season his first full NHL year.

Nikolai Zherdev is better than Claude Giroux.

Also WPG is a budget team.

there are some interesting guys out there this offseason.

SOme undrafted guys I liked and also could Veasey be a realistic option? If he is signed he would be in my top 6 no problem.

You prefer that, but you also prefer to not trade an asset before you determine his true value, either

The league's changed, has a salary cap. If a player doesn't think they can be taken to arbitration and gets their feelings hurt, or a team is afraid of using it, they all need to go find some big-boy pants

Vesey is going to Boston. I'd bet my non-existent dog on it.

I'd try to squeeze Jones out of Columbus.

Had they both happened in the same season and signed new contracts the following year, they would have similar cap hits.

False. It's a tool of the CBA and should be used, just like offer sheets and just like non-tendering.

These are professional athletes, and this is big business. They have agents to take care of this stuff; the days of Tommy Soderstrom being reduced to tears are long gone.

Shea Weber went to arbitration. If the Predators can take Shea Weber to arbitration, the Philadelphia Flyers sure as hell can take Brayden Schenn

- AllInForFlyers

Pretty sure it was Tommy salo not soderstrom.

I wish that getting Jones was a possibility. Considering who they traded to acquire him I can't see them not matching.

I am getting that feeling too.

But I feel Boston has taken a step back and even their prospect pool seems a little behind compared to other teams.

I am also hoping that the Sabres sign Stamkos a 12 million a year deal. I hate Murray. Kind of hate the face thing.

But with all the youth they have and some big contracts with o'reilly and say Stamkos. Someone will offersheet one of their stars if they get to RFA status

I wonder how Jones feels about being in Columbus. They have some big deals with guys that are getting older and they lack some high end prospects I feel. Just traded Rychel for peanuts its seems.

Do you think he wants a long term deal to stay there?

I wouldn't think so but who knows. They're supposed to be actively trading most of their big dollar players. I don't know if they can find takers for those players at those contract dollars.

The Rychel trade was them basically throwing up their hands and doing a little addition by subtraction. Rychel's team was apparently driving them crazy and it was trickling down to the team.

Top pairing defenseman, considered one of the best at both times, playing for a team that doesn't have money flowing out of their butts, asking for an enormous contract every team would want to pay (including Flyers with their offer sheet).

Awarded 7.5M....first time.

Second time unable to go to arbitration...Flyers offered sheet

No prob Bob.

Btw I actually liked soderstrom quite a bit. Was at a game he dueled Andre racicot to scoreless tie way back in 93.

He was a great guy. Really friendly. If he had cared about being a pro hockey player a little more he probably would have been a better goalie.

He was ready to go to arbitration that second time, is that what I am remembering?

Again, that process didn't seem to faze him too much

I wonder how long it will take the Flyers to extend Ghost this coming season?

If he continues his play from last year, probably before All-Star break.

Team can only take a player to arbitration once, a player can go as many times as they want, but Weber signed the offer sheet from the Flyers.

EDIT: Player has all the control after first arbitration most of the time. Weber was getting paid no matter what.

“Well, certainly Edmonton is a primary consideration,” for Lucic, began McKenzie. “You know, it’s funny. Edmonton, historically, has been the non-starter for unrestricted free agency, and this is the impact of winning the draft lottery and getting Connor McDavid. Suddenly, even though the Oilers have been a tire fire for a decade, suddenly it’s a hot ticket for some players. And Connor McDavid is at top of the list why that would be.”

McDavid might be the obvious pro-Edmonton factor, but McKenzie shifted the focus to a different element coming online for the fall.

“The secondary reason: This new rink they’ve got is, by all accounts – I haven’t seen it myself, but I’ve talked to people they have – and they said that this thing takes ‘state of the art’ to another level,” relayed McKenzie. “And that when Drake Caggiula was going through and saw the rink, he was completely, totally, utterly blown away by the facilities and what they’ve got.”
