Depends on the situation. It's not Detroits fault that Datsyuk wants to go back to Russia.

But if they sign the guy till he's 45 and he retires at 40 like most players, then yes, the team should be on the hook for that.

- cburgess

They took the risk when they signed him to a long-term contract after he was 35. The reality is, if the Wings (and now the Yotes) want to protest Datsyuk signing a contract in the KHL forcing that contract to be voided, they can.

They then risk the possibility he comes back to play (unlikely) or if he does not, they suspend him w/o pay and still have the cap hit with no financial impact.

Sucks for the Wings, but that is the same rules everyone else is playing by - they knew it when signing the deal.

Keep up guys and you'll give Pete a heart attack.

As a side note, I understood what you were saying, I was just saying it was not realistic to have a roster full of players you pay nothing for. Nor possible. But it is possible to have a roster of miserable players with miserable contracts, that you are not paying full price on, because the contracts are front loaded.

I get that Mash.

Also, my heart is fine.

You think that's what I'm saying??

THATS EXACTLY WHAT IM SAYING!!

Jesus Christ.

Holy.

Come one.

Good Lord.

I think we were just trying to say that a contract structured like that would have some value to a tanking team trying to reach the cap floor. Yes getting retired contracts is the better option, but there are only a few of those in the league. I'll just leave it at that.

They have to change it tho, cause teams are going to start signing 34 year olds to 7 and 8 year deals knowing some team will trade for his contract when he retires.

Not if they don't allow those contracts to be traded.

That would make sense. That will be a while before that's brought in tho.

I know, and in the next CBA, expect retired contracts to be un-tradeable. But the whole poopstorm started when I claimed a front loaded contract would be appealing to cash strapped teams. There has to be a certain amount to the remainder of the contract, lest they be charged with cap circumvention.

Yeah, I understood your point. And I agree with it.

It's not just about points... I'll take Backes with everything else he provides over the same amount of points for a coward like Vanek

It's kinda stupid that a retired player's contract still counts on your salary cap

i would like to see them sign Ericksson or Ladd for 4 years. failing that, Backes (assuming he even makes it to Friday) or Brouwer.

we will end up signing Perron 2 years/$7 million. he will be a healthy scratch by mid November.

if not you'd have these old guys signing contracts till they were 44 and only playing the first 2-3 years which would be the highest salary. even though they limited the fluctuation of salary over the life of a contract, that would still be pretty blatant circumvention. what i don't understand is how teams are allowed to trade those contracts. like how is Marc Savard still getting traded?

Guys, it's easy...all we have to do is get rid of Plekanec and Emelin, and we have the money to sign Stamkos!!

Well technically he still could come back to play, is Bill Daly going to start pointing out contracts that can't be traded?

Dude, Plekanec-Emelin-DD and you have 14 millions in cap space.

It's ridiculous that this team has cap problems when their 3 best forwards are MASSIVELY underpaid.

They moved Eller. Possible to move them, but harder to do so before july first.

Sign the guy first, trade them after.

Who cares if we don't get the market value back. The UFA signed will be better than the picks or AHLer

And if you can't sign anybody, you still have those plugs to fill a jersey
