I guess they fell that what they had was so crap, that if they let them go 1 of 2 things would happen.
1) No one would sign them, cause they are crap, so they take them back for less money.
2) Someone signs them, so they sign equal crap left over, for less money.
I really think that team is in deep financial trouble. - Mashadar
Ya, they've been (frank)ed over a few times. Not a whole lot of teams could survive losing kovalchuck and parisè for nothing in a short period of time. Like why would you pay morey to see that poop as a Devils fan?

Well, he could still be a bastard if his sister was not married to the Prince.
So... Jon Snow.
Regardless, he still knows (frank)ing nothing.
And I miss Ygritte.

Yes, a bit different
It's actually called night and day.. - pete26
Not really, it's all about spending as little money as you can to reach the cap floor. Whether that is getting retired contracts or front loaded deals, at all adds up to save the team money. |

I get why season ticket holders would fork over the cash, at least in most markets where the waiting lists are fairly long.
But I don't get the single game / walk-up ticket sales. Sure you will have a few people who want to go because they have never been or to take their kid(s), but that really cannot help fill a building.
It has been reported a few times that they needed a bridge loan from the NHL, now I wonder if they are just in too deep.
QC Devils.
There you go.
Start the rumours. |

Pay changes with time. Its not relative between players that sign in different years since every year the cap goes up. Its a simple concept - in another few years PKs contact will be normal among top pairing D and his obscene pay will be water under the bridge... if he is still producing of course. - nords21
Shaw plays on a third line and has never scored 20 goals. Gallagher signed when? 2 years ago? Come on.
He also gave those contracts to Prust, Eller, Emelin, DD, Petry, Plekanec all massively overpaid |

It really makes me laugh that this org insists on bridging Subbans and Galchenyuk but forks over a truckload of cash to Andrew Shaw.

Trading for a retired players contract costs you nothing.
Trading for a players front loaded contract, costs you the money for the remainder of the bloody contract.
Let's not take this any further please. |

No, I wanna take it further.
If you can pay a guy $2M and have it count as $5M against the cap, that is sorta the same thing. You save $3M... or, another way to look at it, is you lower your personal cap floor by $3M.
You have to get to the cap floor somehow, and you need to have 20-22 people on the roster. You actually have to pay some players to play.
