What do you think about the other option? Could the Sabres afford a max contract on their roster for two years?
- Flynox

For 2 years? Absolutely. I think that's too big a gamble though. I'm not sure Stamkos goes for that either. He'll likely be guaranteed $70M+. Why would he settle for ~$29M?

Regardless of how u structure it,
The cap hit would be the same for every year

Example...
Year 1- $6mil salary, $3mil signing bonus
Year 2- $1mil salary

The cap hit for both years would be $5mil
It's total dollars divided by total years

- jdfitz77

I get that, but it's just so the player gets 14 million dollars up front when he signs that contract. it has nothing to do with the cap since it would be the same either way you put it, they did it with O'Reilly

That would be an illegal contract. Can only be +/- 35% I believe? It's to prevent the Hossa, Pronger, Kovalchuk type deals

Top 8 pick again next year .............. no thanks
- fastek

Let's say we are able to sign Vesey & Stamkos

Think about how awesome our lineup could look next year...
Nylander-Stamkos-Ennis
Vesey-Eichel-Reinhart
Kane-O'Reilly-Bailey
Foligno-Larsson-Girgensons

That's a group of forwards that can contend for the Cup IMO

If we miss on Vesey and Stamkos:

Kane RoR Ennis
Girgs Eichel Reinhart
Foligno Larsson Gionta
Moulson Cal Dlo/Fasching?

Want Okposo at 6 for 5yr or roll with this?

- RhinoFan

With this line up, we are on the outside looking in again. I would rather do Lucic at $6 mill for 5-yrs vs Okposo.

I know
Was just trying to illustrate that the cap hit is the same no matter how u structure the deal
So it doesn't matter how Stamkos' potential contract would be structured
At least not as far as the Cap is concerned

Cash wise? Yeah. The cap hit stays the same regardless of his actual salary. So, while it would be an illegal contract if they tried to do it today Hossa only makes $1M salary in his last 4 seasons of his current contract, but his cap hit stays the same at $5.275M. They'd almost certainly front load it to give Stamkos the most cash like they did with ROR. I thought you meant only sign him to a 2 year deal.

Looks great on paper but I can't see them rushing Nylander onto the first line this season. Also, I am getting nervous about both Stamkos and Vesey signing with us. Grand slam if they both do but at this point, i would be happy with one of them signing.

Also, where's Moulson 6-pack?

Ok, my bad
I thought u were doing that trying to help the cap hit

Heck, Pegula has plenty of $$$
We can structure it however he wants if it'll get him to sign here

If that's the line up Murray should be fired
- bluengold12

Yes he should be but we don't have the Boston GM or the Vancouver GM so we're good

I said "next" year

I agree, Nylander should play in Rochester this year.
At least to start
I think we're stuck w Moulson for this year
But maybe we can get Vegas to take him to help get to their Cap floor
And we'll throw them some draft picks
They'll prob want all they can get to start stacking their system
Or maybe they'd even be interested in some mid level prospects like Carrier, Catenacci, Karabacek, etc

You've been reading too many Leafs blogs. How about this scenario:

Eichel progresses normally and get a 5-6M for 2 year contract at the end of his ELC. He isn't going to be a 10M player in 3 years, no one is. McDavid won't, Crosby wasn't. The cap will rise, we will figure things out, and we'll be fine with or without 91 on the books.

As far as Stamkos he's a former 60 goal scorer, yes, but more importantly still one of the top scorers in the league. I remember the same being said about OV when he started going down was that he was only a former goal scorer and then he showed them up. Good goal scorers go through ups and downs but even on Stammer's down years he's still scoring 30-40.

- Zschalberg

How many significant injuries has Ovi had in the past 3 years?....if you want to use him as a comparison, have to look at more than just scoring

Nope, Just the "Visions" of the team going forward or Where he fits in the team, Why this is the best opportunity for him to win a cup here, Stuff like that.

I'd kick the tires on Brett Connolly

low risk
high reward

I'd rather he play the 4th line than fasching or bailey

if the sabres don't get stamkos, I think Nylander gets every chance to make the big club right away

Yes, they can talk, just not about money.
