Just not that right time to commit 70 or 80 million to one guy over 7 years. - stormeyAlterEgo
Exactly. Don't have the core of players required to make this kind of move + it puts pressure and expectations on the players and management. |

Completely disagree. It's the PERFECT time to sign him.
1. He's an ELITE center and you're getting him for strictly salary (no player assets). It's a lot of money to be sure -- but he's a legit superstar in the league.
2. He can take the brunt of the spotlight away from Matthews in Auston's formative years.
3. He significantly accelerates the Leafs rebuild and puts them into a legitimate playoff contention conversation.
4. He's got significant playoff experience and is captain material (hell, he IS a captain).
5. When exactly is the right time to pay a superstar - in the prime of his career - big bucks? How many times do you have an opportunity like this? Do you wait 2 years for Tavares?
6. He's a hometown talent.
7. Can you imagine how HUGE a star Stammer would be in Toronto? He's money in the bank just in terms of endorsements.
Look, if you can sign this guy for 9-10M a year you do it. He's a major piece to any team's puzzle -- especially a team that is filled to the brim with young talent that could deal with some superstar veteran leadership.
The only way I can see him not coming to TO is if Buf/Det make a ridiculous over-payment in the range of 11/12M. Which is entirely possible... but if he signs for less than that with any team not named Toronto I will be shocked and awed*.

I agree with 1-4 and 6-7.
Just not sure on number 5. Tavares would be better but you can't necessarily wait on that of course. But since the CBA changed to allow younger UFA's we are just now seeing that happening. In 3 or 4 years time when this team is really ready to compete for a cup what if a similar 26 year old become available as opposed to a 30 year old Stamkos who's already had some severe injuries.

Do they? Their blogger actually wrote (last Friday) that he hopes they trade for his negotiating rights. I'm not sure he realized those rights would open up to every team in the league as of midnight |

You get a player of Stamkos' ability become available for nothing more than money, then you make a damn offer unless you want to not attempt to win at all during that 7 year span... - lumlums

If this is true on Rychel...slick move by the Leafs ...cant post the full article
Once again, the Leafs have taken advantage of the Collective Bargaining Agreement with this move.
Harrington, based on his AHL and NHL experience, will be waiver-eligible as early as this training camp, and would require protection for the 2017/18 Las Vegas Expansion Draft. The former stipulation is the reason for the conditional draft pick, as Harrington is a high risk to not make the Blue Jackets and require waivers in a few months.
Rychel doesn't require waivers. Not at training camp, and not at all next year; his exemption holds until the start of 2017/18. But, as a two-year AHL veteran, he's not protected from the Expansion Draft, right?
Hold the phone.
Teenagers in the AHL are rare due to the CHL transfer agreement; typically, you only see Europeans and North Americans who forgo the NCAA. But you can also jump to the AHL if you finish four full major-junior seasons, a circumstance that only applies to late-year players who jumped into junior as early as possible. Jason Spezza is a famous example of this, and Rychel matches the rule. As such, his first year in the AHL was considered a slide-year, and not a professional season. Like William Nylander, he's exempt from the expansion draft.
doesnt require waiver and is expansion draft except? ..hmm |

If by "Garth" you mean Michael Pachla, then you are correct:
How to steal some of Toronto's thunder at the 2016 NHL Draft?

--An announcement that the Sabres have traded for the rights to Tampa's Steven Stamkos. We all know the Sabres are in the mix and we all know that Buffalo's owners, the Pegula's, are not afraid to go all-in financially to get what they want. Although owning the rights to Stamkos doesn't mean he'll sign with the Sabres, many of his needs can be checked off in Buffalo, including the willingness of the Sabres to pony up the cash. |

It was a mistake. Puljujarvi was the obvious choice at #3.
But hey, PLD is actually a very good player too so they might end up being happy in the end. |

Yeah I don' t think anyone really liked them leaving PullUpJammies on the board, but Dubois might be good enough that it won't matter.
