Soooo I don't know that trading from the center position is prudent. Every team to win a Cup except for one Hawks team has been hellah deep up the middle (post lockout anyway). ONE hawks team. Sharp was a center for the beginning of his career and start with the Hawks and why Philly moved him (cause they had a bunch).
Toews - Sharp - Bolland - Madden = kick ass lotta depth
Toews - Richards - Vermette - Kooga = kick ass lotta depth
Toews - Zeus - Kooga - Bolland = meh but they were 6 NHL players deep on the blue line
Otherwise, with the exception of one Hawks team that was very deep defensively (and stellar in goal for that matter), every other team to go deep \ win has been very good if not exceptional down the middle of the ice. Its really one position that shouldn't be marginalized, regardless of who is or isnt on the wing. |

@MarkLazerus thinks the signings actually add flexibility:
Cheaper than entry-level deals for top prospects. Extra $600,000 or so could be the difference for signing Campbell. - Marlowe
Exactly---- bargain basement deals-- |

Horrible signings. Horrible roster decisions. Poor management.
All of the above.
It's getting increasingly difficult to remain positive about this team.... - SimpleJack
It's not even July and we're already in the doom and gloom phase, eh? |

I'm not kidding the Hawks might have the weakest bottom 6 group of forwards in NHL history this upcoming season. But at least we'll have Campbell......

This. The roster has to have 22/23 guys, so the fact is Rozy @ $600K and Mash @ $575K means more cap space for other guys (like Campbell). Give Q his Mash and Rozy toys to play with - they won't mean beans when it comes to success or failure. - EbonyRaptor
Signing Mash and Rozy is not the end of the world or of Western Civilization or of the Blackhawks. I agree with the above. At best, they are low risk, low dollar insurance. Both know the system and they are marginal contributors at best.
Is it tomorrow yet? |

WE NEED A LW.... My mindset is this. You hold back signings until you ink a guy who can help out out as the #2 LW as 72 needs to be bumped up. Not ledge jumping but with so little money to play with every buck counts. |

My mindset is this. Any team with Desjardins as their primary bottom 6 goal scorer won't be winning many hockey games. |

Maybe Korpikoski (spelling?) too? Depth winger.?
If AA is moved and they get a player or pick back, they should use that for Eric Staal (I wouldn't go over $3M with him). Then take a look at McGinn for another winger... Assuming Eric Staal is the new 2C. |

Don't know. U just spent a mill on 2 guys with nothing. Well Mash never had it and Rozy is just worn out. We need youth and speed. And Stan comes home with an 83 Yugo with the check engine light on. - z1990z
But I think guys are forgetting that you are not really adding that money. To get Rosy's $600,000 on the books you have to move Svedberg down to Rockford and his $700,000...so you just saved $100,00 of cap space. Same with Mash as our 13th forward. His $575,000 may allow Schmaltz's or Motte's $925,000 to stay in Rockford...saving us another $350,000 or so. And maybe that money helps sign Campbell and Staal/Brad Richards.

THIS^^^
Plus as @ 2ndcityhockey points out:
Replacing Svedberg and Baun with Rozy and Mashinter in our roster projection saves the Hawks $200,000 in cap space.
I think they are looking at this as a low risk signing and the ability to take up two slots at basically league minimum. They are not done yet.
Context and perspective are everything and we don't have the big picture yet. |

Hawks Cap :
$ 6 mil 4 slots 3 F 1D or
$6 mil 5 slots 4 F 1D - mrpaulish
With the Rozy and Mash signings - the Hawks have 10F, 7D and 2G. Current salary cap is $67.8M, meaning there is $5.2M cap space.
So let's play the what if game ...
1. Hawks sign Campbell for $2M and send Svedberg ($750K) to Rockford - net increase of $1.25M so now the cap space is ($5.2M - $1.25M = ) $3.95M
2. Hawks sign E.Staal for $2M which brings cap space down to $1.95M.
3. Hawks promote Hartman ($865K) and McNeill (~$800K) which leaves $285K cap space and this roster:
Staal-Toews-Hossa
Panarin-AA-Kane
Desjardins-Kruger-Panik
McNeill-Rasmussen-Hartman
Mashinter
Keith-Seabrook
Campbell-Hjalmarsson
Kempny-TvR
Rozsival
Crawford
Darling
