Not surprising and easy to believe. They came close to pulling the trigger on him at the TDL, before Ladd heated up. Nice because he's also versatile. Good character guy. - John Jaeckel
Id be "OK" with that but again it would have to be less than market value right ? |

Now the question is, are they considering an offer for him to play center or LW? and does this foreshadow a AA trade. I think it is an upgrade regardless but I would rather have him at center knowing how deep the west is down the middle. |

I think think the writing is on the wall that Staal is no longer a big money guy and there are questions as to whether he CAN be an impact player b/c I really don't think he made a difference in the playoff.
You get versitility in that he was a scoring shooting centre who was asked at times to be a left wing...
The question remains if he can be a top six anymore.
I guess I would say, I don't know b/c I haven't watched much Hurricanes to even venture an opiono in real time. |

BREAKING - MTL is gearing up to sign one of Perron, Ladd or Backes. They will get at least one of them. |

Exactly!
I think he has the skill, and the pedigree to play between panarin and kane. He is only 31, and I know he hasn't looked the same since the knee injury in the Olympics but I could see playing with some top end skill in Chicago as a rejuvenation vs playing in Carolina. I personally think he would be an upgrade over AA and if he comes cheaper I have to believe that makes the team better with him as a center and not LW |

Move Panarin to Toews' line and slot Staal in on AA/Kane line. Let Staal take faceoffs? |

With the cap hell the Hawks are in I wanted to compare the cap to the NHL's biggest competition, the NBA.
The NHL has a cap space of 73,000,000 for a max of 23 players on the roster roughly an average of $3,173,913 per player.
The NBA has Cap of $94,000,000. The majority of the teams carry 14 players. That makes it an average 6,714,285 per player. Plus, teams can go up to the Luxury Tax Threshold of $113,000,000.
I heard that Joakim Noah wants 18M a year!!! Really?!?!? 18M a year!!!
I guess this just shows how poor the NHL does to market the sport. I hate watching the NBA, but I have to admit, for as little as I watch I do know who the most popular players are.
I just can't understand how much of a difference there is in cap space. The NHL has 21M less to spend on 9 more players on the team. They need to fix this. - spudrock512
When I heard Noah could get 18 mil....I almost fell off my chair.
The NBA does market better. That said though, I don't believe there is a large following of hockey by the African American community...at least no where near the following of the NBA. The NHL would have to market better in general...but also to the African American community in particular.
We are all fans of hockey here and really enjoy the product on the ice...but that does not mean everyone else enjoys it as much as we do.
Finally, while Noah making 18 mil is unbelievable...I loved his passion and his heart and soul desire to play hard every minute in Chicago. He never quit and gave everything he had. So I am happy for him if he can get that contract.

Low ball.
Also, I know when they were looking (hard) at him last Spring, scouting the Hurricanes hard, they were seeing him at 1LW. But his versatility is a plus, ESPECIALLY if you are considering moving AA in the next 24 hours. |

It's official now:
http://blackhawks.nhl.com...62b7c9af7f21362dd40ee0b38
This is an extremely questionable start to free agency (even though it starts tomorrow).
Extremely valuable cap space is being used up on players that will contribute nothing useful to the team next season. Rozy again? Really? |

Can't compare caps without comparing TV contracts:
NBA has a new contract with ESPN/ABC and Turner for 2.67 BILLION per year. That's tripling the current deal.
NHL has contracts with Rogers (Cdn$ 436 MM per year) and NBC (US$ 200MM per year) for a total of (at today's exchange rate) US$ 536MM per year. |

I'm sure both Rosival and Mashinter will be for very cheap contracts.
No F'ing idea why either was re-signed, but whatever.
Leads me to believe that the Hawks are going to be trading one of the younger D-men (Gus, Sved, TVR, Pokka) here as Rosival is the 7D next year by the looks of it. He's probably the language buddy for Kempny as well. If the Hawks sign Campbell, then for sure one or maybe two of those D are getting traded, hopefully for help up front.
Mashinter though, man, that pisses me off. |
