8x$8.5 for stamkos

Good thing Toews and Kane gave us "discounts"

- hawkeytalkman

The talk 2 years ago when they signed them they would look like discounts but I see them being the highest paid players in the league for at least 5-6 of there 8 years. Going to make it really tough on the hawks to compete.

Campbell flat out says Chicago is his first choice.

Really hoping he's back with the team. Soupy's still skating 20 minutes a game and can play...if you get him cheap enough he really solidifies your bottom pair...he's got 50 mil in the bank I don't think he needs the cash at this point.

I just looked at my calendar 4 or 5 times. I can confirm it is not April 1st.

I think this is more of a case of Stamkos taking a big discount to stay. Not testing FA, he wanted to be there and compete.

Guarantee he would have had much bigger offers had he gone to FA, and if you let Kane/Toews get there, odds are a team offers them more as well.

Kane > Stamkos
Toews > Stamkos

Hawks win Cup > Stamkos & Lightning--

No state tax in FL-- > IL corrupt tax hell

- jb3333

Nice Way to spin it...Stamkos could have easily gotten more on open market. He took a discount. A legit hometown discount, not the make believe discounts given to Chicago.

I am not disagreeing with either assessment...

but the fact is both Toew/Kane and Stamkos were in the position where they could set the market and command top dollar in the league if they so chose.

Toews and Kane swung for the fences.

Stamkos chose to stay and work out a deal to help Tampa Bay, especially since the rumored amounts of near $11 mil per year from Toronto or Buffalo would have equated to the same take home pay that Stamkos would have gotten at $8.5 with Tampa, who repeatedly said that was their max offer

And we all know he would have made boat loads more side money by going up to Toronto in endorsements

Even if Edmonton is thinking that its really Adam Larson and Milan Lucic for Hall its still very curious.
- mrpaulish

It is, especially with guys like Shattenkirk and Trouba out there.......... At face value it looks lopsided but as has been said recently you don't always make trades to win them you do so to make your team better. No doubt EDM did that but you have to at least wonder about maximizing assets looking at EDM.

Wow. What a whirlwind half hour of action.

Love the Weber/Subban deal for both teams. Weber fits the new identity Montreal is trying to build. Subban fits the free wheeling style Nashville wants to play.

Hall for Larsson. I like Larsson, but think the Oilers could have gotten a prospect or two as well in return for Hall. Again, both teams will be better for this. These are straight up hockey trades and that's what I love about them. GMs doing what needs to be done to turn weaknesses into strengths.

Stamkos staying in Tampa at a solid rate. Or is it a sign-and-trade? Who even knows anymore?! WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

Exactly.

The "discount" spin was, "hey, they could have asked for max contracts under the CBA!" according to their agent

They did wonders for this team and we are eternally grateful, but lets not pretend they didnt stick out both hands and said "pay me" with little wiggle to the actual discount side

Yep...every damn player on this team has, except for Hammer and his contract was essentially negotiated by Doug Wilson.

As I said it admirable what Stamkos seemingly has done-- to stay with the team that drafted you-- and is competitive--

Truly it is a different economic landscape impacting the cap now-- the projections were that it would be higher by now--

In the meantime I still take Toews & Kane-- Bowman just has to get creative-- even more than before--

If a team would have offered Kane/Toews $11M, it is a discount to stay in Chicago.

A discount is a discount, just matters how big one is. Why are we faulting the FO for signing them to a deal less than what they would have accepted somewhere else?

Stammer basically said he would play in Tampa for $8.5M. It's the players discretion, but to each team, it was a discount.

That is a home town discount. Sorry but that is a player who wants to stay and win and gets what a huge cap hit north of 10 mil does. I don't want to hear toews or Kane complain about poopty line mates. Sack up boys. Stamkos just did what you should've done. Now his team has an extra 2-3 mil to spend elsewhere. That AVV flat out sucks. The Lightinging are going to be really good for a while.

No one kid themselves. A healthy Stamkos is a top 10 NHL player.

Good for Stamkos. Seems like an old time stand up kinda guy and it seems he left a few dollars on the table to stay.......... Now I'm guessing they have to clear some space with Kucherov, Palat and Killorn RFA's with Johnson and and Hedman next year!!!

A deal in place to move Bishop (DAL?)

Disagree. TSN had a calculator today looking at the bottom line take home pay for Stamkos and he'd have to make $11.5 mil annually from Buffalo or Detroit to take home more than the deal he signed with Tampa. Yzerman always knew his offer would be hard to beat because he could offer longer term and less taxes (being in FLA with no income tax).

Sorry, nobody was offering T+K more than $10.5. By the time they would have hit UFA, the projections on the future cap were already falling.

They cleared the highest cap hits in league, both of them, by a full $1 mil, on the SAME team. Explain to me how they honestly felt they were giving Chicago ANY kind of discount? Because their agent said so? While running to the bank with twin $525k commissions under each arm?

...And for all on here who want to take John out to be flogged when a rumor doesn't turn out....

We just had one of the biggest trades in years happen and Montreal was involved but there wasn't one peep I heard that Weber was going anywhere.

I never heard anyone say Toews and Kane gave a hometown discount. I heard Stan say, "any team would be glad to have this problem." Stan paid them for the cups. Stamkos ain't won no cups. It looked to me like the Toews, Kane thing was a media set up. I didn't hear anything about negotiations.

THATS ALL

Sounds like Campbell may be heading to Dallas.

I think the very most important thing to Campbell is money, period. I think being over paid 20 or so mil over his career has skewed his perception.
