It is a stretch to consider Sekera and his contract an anchor or to compare it with Bickell. Sekera isn't a #1 D, but he is an okay #2 or #3 guy. Considering he still put up 30 points last year while playing with the likes of Mark Fayne, Darnell Nurse and Justin Schultz. I don't think he is a huge value, because Edmonton typically has to overpay to attract UFA, but he is an asset that can still play a decent game.

Anchor might have been too strong--- but I bet Edmonton would love a do over on that deal-- and yet to be seen what it turns out to be-- but they did overpay--

The reason ROR has his contract structured that way is that the NHL can't escrow the signing bonus, so he takes most of his pay home while other players don't. It's actually quite brilliant.

ROR makes too much money. That is one guy who is overpaid IMO. He is a very good 2C, not a 1C.

Never say never. If the Oilers can get their hands on a defenseman or two, they might just be contending for a playoff spot this season.
- EKB13

You may be right but so far the Oilers just seem unable or unwilling to go out and get help on defense. Oilers should have been good by this point based on the number of top draft picks they have had over the last 10 years but the organization seems obsessed with taking offensive players to the detriment of the defense. Lucic is a perfect example. Oilers have too many wingers and yet they seem interested in another $6 million winger.

Exactly. They got a good coach now. A deep group of forwards and some pretty decent goal-tending. They need to add some D and probably a good vet or two that can add some leadership. Considering as well, that their division is a bit weak overall... Calgary/Vancouver/Arizona are all pretty useless right now.

McDavid might be among the top 5 in scoring next year (possibly) and they dropped some dead weight like the 4.5 mil they paid to Nikitin who was pretty much their version of Bickell in terms of being un-tradable and playing in the AHL.

That is a great deal for them. Guy who put up 20+ goals and 25 assists, wins draws (56%) last year.

I think players like Lucic and Kassian are players their new GM wants to add size/grit. Oilers are in many ways like the Hawks, in that people complain their forward group lacks size and toughness. They are likely going to be dealing some of that winger/forward depth to help on D, because honestly, being someone that lives in Edmonton, I have seen how much UFA don't really want to sign or just how much they have to overpay.

Players sometimes want to come here, but then they have to convince their wives to live in Northern Canada, which has often been a show stopper.

Can Mason Raymond still play? Cheap winger option if so.

Shaw, Kane, Toews, Crosby. . .all share an agent. Can't say that he doesn't get the most for his clients.

Looks about done. Can still skate yet staying upright has always been an issue. Weak on the puck and not very aggressive.

The CBA (50.4-d-1) specifically says that the escrow applies to the player's salary and bonuses.

And Maroon.........Generally have a hard time sitting through a whole Oiler'ss game but I think that is changing in a big way. The biggest reason being is adults are running that franchise now.

A bit of translation from this article.

If it is not considering a return to the past with the CH Weise also knows that he is not in the plans of the Hawks.

"They have problems with the salary cap and have already exchanged important players," he said.

Acquired with Tomas Fleischmann in exchange for Phillip Danault and a choice of 2nd round draft pick in 2018, Weise has not earned the trust of Joel Quenneville during his brief stay in Chicago.

"I found myself with a very good team, but I did not play big minutes, he recalled. I have not found my role with the Hawks and I do not know why it was not working the way I wanted. Early in the season, defenseman Trevor Daley also had difficulty integrating into the Hawks system. "

- Return of the Roar

Ok to cross Weise off the list, and not just due to salary cap issues.

EDM and NJD appear to be edging closer to completion of a trade involving Taylor Hall. Could be imminent. Not official yet.

Some speculation Adam Larsson going the other way.

That'd be a big one if it goes down.

Maybe that explains the interest NJD might have in TVR as a right hand shot D to add. Not to "replace" what Larsson brings, but just another RHD.
