I am not well versed in that either but he gets 84M, not 128M. I think the signing bonus is a) up front each year he gets it and not paid over the season so that b) it's guaranteed whether there is a lockout/cancelled season or not. Someone else I am sure can better explain it. Signing bonuses and cap recapture are both complex to me. - tyweb69
Now it clicks, that sounds familiar now. Thanks. Bonuses are a way to guarantee salary - and the K/T contracts therefore have the most protection that I've seen

Fair point--- lots of bad contracts out there-- just tale a look at Columbus trying to dump salary -- Edmonton has an anchor contract with Sekera-- we had Bickell-- etc
It makes you wonder if these teams actually evaluated these players with that high of a ceiling-- or they anticipated more cap growth-- or some teams have to overbid to attract the players to the city / team-- or al of the above!! - jb3333
It is on the owners and GMs. Players and agents are going to want to maximize their value. Management are the ones who go ahead and sign of on it. Betman's hard cap is supposed to help this but it doesn't. It just pushes lower roster players salaries down. Look at the number of guys who did not get qualifying offers this year that arguably have legitimate NHL level talent. The trend will continue.
Maybe one way is to extend the RFA rights some how. If some GM is going to pay stupid money make him think twice about it by having it cost draft picks. Think anyone signs Clarkson to that dumb deal if it costs them a 1st and 3rd? |

I gather you disagree . But I do believe he played well in the last two games against ST.L .And with a full training camp and time for Q and he to adjust he is a great fit , money pending .. |

Was t that the year they tried Kane at center with Hosea and carcillo? |

Well I see Brouwer being a day 1 signee come July 1st. Maybe if Soup signs he can call Brouwer and talk him into the reunion tour?? - z1990z
Easily Z. He is going to see a good $4-5M. Can't afford him until another contract moves out. This team definitely needs a top 2 line LW aside from Panarin. |

Yeah, I was at Game 6 and he definitely impressed with his energy, tenacity, speed, and aggravating-the-oppostion factors. Lots of disruptive hits away from the puck. And, he seems to have a very positive attitude. Wonder if now that Q has lost his "irreplaceable" one, he would give Weise a chance. |

The plus side of this, for teams like the Hawks anyway, is you can get older players (perhaps like a Campbell) on the cheap to fill out your roster while not crippling the cap much further. This way you can fill holes with more proven players than relatively unknown/unproven players on ELC's. Doesn't make it right, I think changes will be made next CBA but every cloud has a silver lining I guess.

So strange to see a team like CLB that hasn't had any real success have cap trouble. The Finn GM can sure stock the prospect cupboard but his cap management and bad contracts are a real problem....... I think Clarkson may be an LTIR possibility.

Ryan O'Reilly's deal might be the most protected - all but a $1m a year is 'signing bonus' so he is fully lockout protected. He actually has more money in his signing bonuses than Kane or Toews. |

Très bon texte ici: Weise: Montréal pas une option | Le Journal de Montréal

Very good text here: Weise: Montréal not an option. Le Journal de Montréal. http://www.journaldemontr...e-montreal-pas-une-option
I'm not sure but I think he's saying Weise is not a fit in Montreal - walleyeb1
A bit of translation from this article.
If it is not considering a return to the past with the CH Weise also knows that he is not in the plans of the Hawks.
"They have problems with the salary cap and have already exchanged important players," he said.
Acquired with Tomas Fleischmann in exchange for Phillip Danault and a choice of 2nd round draft pick in 2018, Weise has not earned the trust of Joel Quenneville during his brief stay in Chicago.
"I found myself with a very good team, but I did not play big minutes, he recalled. I have not found my role with the Hawks and I do not know why it was not working the way I wanted. Early in the season, defenseman Trevor Daley also had difficulty integrating into the Hawks system. " |

Thanks for the translation, Roar.......... Hope that the Hawks are a team of perpetual cap problems and have a "quirky" coach doesn't become common perception with players around the league.

Never say never. If the Oilers can get their hands on a defenseman or two, they might just be contending for a playoff spot this season. |

That billionaire Pagula really wants to win and will spend to do so. Looking at that O'Rielly contract makes me think BUF will offer more than anyone else for Stamkos.

Pass on Weise I didn't like him before we got him and he didn't change my mind. Hartman is a better bottom 6 option and put Boll on there with a trade for a prospect I'll be happy. |

It is a stretch to consider Sekera and his contract an anchor or to compare it with Bickell. Sekera isn't a #1 D, but he is an okay #2 or #3 guy. Considering he still put up 30 points last year while playing with the likes of Mark Fayne, Darnell Nurse and Justin Schultz. I don't think he is a huge value, because Edmonton typically has to overpay to attract UFA, but he is an asset that can still play a decent game. |

The problem with Q is he signs role players and tells them not to play the role they're comfortable with/known for. IE. "Weiss...now that you're here don't hit anyone, don't crash/park yourself in front of the opponent's net, and for GOD's SAKE don't fight ANYONE!!!" |

I like Hartman, but calling him a better bottom 6 options is a stretch. he's got about 8 NHL games under his belt. |

The reason ROR has his contract structured that way is that the NHL can't escrow the signing bonus, so he takes most of his pay home while other players don't. It's actually quite brilliant.

If true-- they likely have to deal one of their #1 picks-- Hall? DO NOT want to see Hall traded for Shattenkirk---
Think Lucic gets 6M x 6? IMO thats an overpay-- and will cost them in the long run-- I view Lucic as a player that fits best on a 'win now' team -- he won't be getting quicker as he ages-- Does Edmonton think they will win in the next 2 years? |
