Well either I worded it poorly or you missed the point entirely and can't figure it out.

Hinostroza is a bust, Kero is a bust, Baun is a bust, .....could see both McNeill & Hartman making it.

Tough call, but I don't think so. I'm not the very best judge of salaries but it seems to me Helm brings elite speed, some skill, secondary scoring, versatility. 3 mil?
- Mr Ricochet

I recall Helm being a fast player and tough to play against---

No offense, but it's kind of silly comparing Toews/Kane's contracts to Crosby's when his was signed years earlier with a term length that isn't allowed anymore. Crosby entire contract is worth over $20 million more than the Hawks duo, it's just spaced out over a lot more years. Ovechkin's contract is $40m more ffs. Crosby is being paid more, dude. A lot more.

If Crosby had sign post the new-CBA, he would have a cap hit of $10-12m too.

- L_B_R

No offense is taken but all that matters is cap hit and they have a higher cap hit than the best player in the league. You can rationalize it all you want, but those cap hits, along with 50, 7, 16 have drowned this team.

Yes the last 2 seasons Kane has become the best offensive player in the league. If not for a dirty crosscheck from behind, he could have gone back-to-back Art Ross/Hart Trophies. However, at the time of their extensions, Kane had never been Top 3 in scoring, and Toews had never been Top 5. Why did they deserve to be paid $1mil more than the 100points per year Crosby?
- EnzoD

I think Stan believed the cap would continue to escalate by 3 million a year when he signed both Kane and Toews unfortunately , the opposite happened. You are correct , Kane and Toews should have been signed for around 9 Mil. Now Stan and Co are paying the price. Personally, Toews has tapered off the last two years in his play . His performance has not matched his paycheck.....Kaner has.

I have been saying that for weeks. Toews and Kane were both Top 10 players in the league at the time of their extensions. Did they deserve to be paid more than Crosby? Heck no. They should have both taken $9mil/year MAX. That is a legitimate roster player on this team. Bettman and his BS cap projections played a part in their inflated salaries, but they did not deserve to be the highest paid players in the league. Very similarly, Stamkos does not deserve to make more than Crosby this summer. Patrick Kane deserves his contract after his last 2 seasons as he has increased his production since that extenstion was signed. Meanwhile, Jonathan Toews scored 57 points this year. I love both those guys for what they have done for this city and this franchise, but greed is not always good...
- EnzoD

Give it a rest ,it in the past . and it certainly was not greed . And yes Stamer will be the highest paid player in the league by the end of the week . Toews and Kane would have made more separately there is no question . There is a cap ,we are not going to win every year or even every 5 or 10 years .Better get use to it . If we do snag 1 or two more with this core we will be some of the luckiest fans around .. Nobody is going to do the HAWKS any favors . Stan has made mistakes ,and made some very shrewd moves . HAWKS will need to build with youth ,and Stan did a great job of restocking the shelves with prospects this year .HAWKS will need to get lucky with young players (Hartman , Motte ,Rasmussen ,McNiell ,Pokka ,Forsling. ) or some cheap veteran FA players .

So Ovechkin should be the highest paid player in the league? More points and most important way more goals?

They deserve to get paid more because every year people make more money. Crosby will make about $20M more over the life of his deal and has four more years than Toews of Kane. After 8 more years do you think Toews and Kane are going to each garner an additional $20M in contract for an additional 4 years playing? I would highly doubt it. The crap of it is the cap hit. Yes theirs is higher, but if the Hawks could structure the deal differently, it would be less of an issue. Can't do it anymore, so you deal with what you have.

I like McGinn for sure for the right price... Him and Campbell would be great additions. I think we are on the same page on the other guys likely being pipe dreams. What do you think it takes to get a guy like McGinn? Wasn't he looking in the $4 mil + range?
- Frenchy4488

The Hawks could probably get McGinn to play ball in the $3.25M-3.75M. Not ideal, but not horrible either. If they can get Ladd for $4M for 4 years, that's not a bad deal either. I could see him wanting to stay on the Hawks to play with his buddies. McGinn I could see signing in MTL, VAN, CAL, WASH, NYI and also Chicago. Playing with Toews on line 1 or Kane on line 2, PP time, you're going to see a 50 point
(25 goals / 25 assists) player IMO.

Was going to say he seems to be hurt a lot but was surprised to find he only missed 12 games total over the past two seasons. It was the '13-'14 season that he missed half of.

There are two Dahlstroms. Carl is a defensemen selected in 2013, John is a winger selected in 2015. They're not related.

Within five seconds of trading Seabrook for Taylor Hall (who you still hope reaches his potential) you have 865,000 saved.

WOW!

You gave up a true first pair defenseman you can't find a replacement for...
to help aid in CAP space?

in fact I can easily argue there are at least twelve teams that don't have ONE as good as him..

- wiz1901

Within 20 games of the season starting, there would be 100 posts on how stupid Stan was for trading his 1A Dman, 1A Captain, and toughest guy on the team.

Also would be female doging that it should've been CC that got moved because for some reason, he just isn't as good as he's been in the past

Kane had the best regular season last year....but I guess you would also say Panarin>McDavid because he had the better season.

Crosby is still the best player in the NHL, as he has the more important to prove it.

- Jeropotato

Ut oh! Did someone somewhere in the universe dare to even consider some other player even in the general vicinity of Lord Sydney Crosby? Shame!

Learn from this mistake, Wabush, you blasphemer! The proper way to discuss the best players in hockey is to discuss the best players ranked 11-20. To properly honor Cindy, we reserve spots 2-10 as blank. The "2nd best player" discussion starts with number 11.

There are only like 6 or 7 last names in all of Sweden, so with as many Swede's as the Hawks draft, its inevitable they'll have multiple guys with the same last names

Hi all,
First time poster, grateful daily reader.

First off, thank you to all for the (often) informative discussion and chat that occurs.
As an Australian, sadly hockey is a minority sport, so Hockeybuzz is a lifesaver, especially as my job allows me to read a computer most of the day, and as most of the good stuff happens overnight my time, I often have a lot of catching up to do .

JJ, you do a fantastic job, so please keep up the good work, or else my days will get very boring, very quickly.

Hoping for some signings/good news soonish, and a good year to follow .

There will be some signings pretty soon. Hopefully, the Hawks can shore up their 1LW position. Post more often brother

If the Hawks can find a serviceable 1LW or play Panarin at 1LW and find a serviceable 2LW, whether it's by FA signing (unlikely without movement of $$), trade (again, would hate to see more people go, but its becoming more and more of a foregone conclusion), or a lightning in a bottle unknown signing (Does Panarin have a clone somewhere in a Russian lab??), I'll be a very happy Hawk fan

Appropriately enough my local pub serves a homebrew/local beer on tap simply called piss, so a very fitting welcome indeed
