Looking at tsn top 40 ufas.
Would matt Martin, David schlemko and maybe chimera and parenteau be REALISTIC CAP wise additions???

- Abadseed

Martin is gonna get paid. I think hell get a 3 year deal worth 8-10 mil. Thats too expensive for the Hawks.

Neither was Richard Panik, and he was the 1LW in the playoffs on the Hawks. I was a big fan of Smith but the Brendan smith 4 seconds late head shot in the preseason took something out of him. Still, he's been an NHL player while McNeil and Hartman played in the AHL. Hartman and McNeil are 4th line 1st rounders until they prove otherwise.

Doesn't change the fact that Ben Smith sucks these day.

Trevor Lewis just signed for about 1.7M AAV. Anyone paying Martin more then Lewis will regret that contract.

Is it a good sign for the Hawks when about half of those not receiving qualifying offers from other teams are considered upgrades to our bottom 6 and some even talked about as possibly in our top 6 ? or maybe not, Maybe all teams cutting players in order to free up cap space to sign who they consider most valuable ? Looks like a buyers market on low to mid range talent this year. Mid-High end talent salaries rise , Low - mid end talent salaries drop ?
- bhawk1s

Yep. It's the Pareto Principle. 20% of the population (in this case NHL player) will get 80% of the total salaries paid.

Andrew Shaw (6 yrs @ $3.9M) comparables:
Oshie 5 @ $4.175M
Simmonds 6 @ $3.975M
Gallagher 6 @ $3.75M

More: generalfanager.com/contracts/comp…

to compare contracts signed in different years you really need some sort of multiplier; time value of money and inflation are important considerations. Since those deals are older, they are better for the player than Shaw's.

Now that their contracts are in place...would anyone still take Shaw over Kruger?

Agreed. Martin is a career 4th liner. He scored 10 goals for the first time in his whole career. Certainly not worthy of anything more than 2M aav

Trade AA for a 4D and sign Shipyachev or Colborne at a lower AAV? I would rather have StanBo bargain bin shopping so that he can sign extend Panarin this summer. I just dont see how any AAV over $1mil is added without trading another large cap hit....
- EnzoD

I would be good with that, moreso with Ship. I think trading for a cheaper cap hit without a significant loss in production would be prudent

Anyone else notice that Patrick Wiercioch didn't get a qualifying offer from Ottawa? I took a look -- he wasn't scoring last year but he was pushing play. I seem to remember the Hawks having some interest in him at the deadline. Wonder how much he'd cost to bring on.

With 0 goals and 5 assists last year, I can't imagine he'll command much money. I'd guess less than the $2.7m he was paid last year. Maybe even below the $2m AAV on his last contract.

Agreed. However, it will be interesting to watch Shaw with the Habs. I wouldn't be surprised if he's employed as the Habs version of Marchand, or ends up battling Marchand on a regular basis.

The Hawks cannot afford Kruger at $3.1mil OR Shaw at $3.9 mil. So, neither...again.

I understand that I am not an insider and I have no clue what the status of Shaw's back is. I will say, that if Marc Bergevin gave him six years at essentially $4mil AAV, I'd hope that he had an independent physical done to ensure that his back was healthy. I think Shaw's health issues are overstated and a way for us fans to cope with the loss of a huge role player. I mean, Kruger's wrist was snapped in half. You know, the wrist that is used to control a hockey stick and leverage a faceoff? I think Kruger is as much or more a health risk, and he doenst bring the scoring or versatility to play in the top 6 like Shaw does.

Like I just replied to Darth, I dont think the Hawks can afford EITHER Kruger at $3.1 or Shaw at $3.9, but I still think Shaw is the more important player. Forecheck, speed, finishing, net front, versatility. Hartman looks to be a solid bottom 6 goonish player, but Shaw is a pest with finishing ability. I think we all have underestimated the hole in the lineup that losing Shaw will create. It is not on the same level as Saad, but it is a big hole to fill, nonetheless. I'm very disappointed to see him go, but I hope he helps Montreal make the playoffs next year.

Rockford could sign him. Help the youngsters. Fan favorite and good community guy. No shame in an ahl career.

Even if he is 100% healthy now I suspect with his balls to the wall play at 100mph every night and his smaller statue that the back is going to get injured if it isnt already.

Im so happy for Shaw , I really wish he was traded to someone else though , I hate Montreal .

And to think that Shaw is now paid virtually the same as...

...Wayne Simmonds.

Devante smith pelley and jarrod tinordi were not qualified yesterday. DSP seems like a young PWF with lots of potential.

Seems like a lot of quality depth pieces upfront and on D are out in the open now and were not qualified , I think maybe the Blackhawks might have a plan huh ? Seems even the average clubs are not wanting to pay 2m to bottom 6 contributors . The Blackhawks might be ok after all . Might be able to pay a 1 LW for 4.5 per and then fill out the roster with nice pieces at 1m each.

Need to leave room for Soupy. But yes!

As I tell my hockey loving friends when things look bleak in a game, there's still a lot of hockey left to play! Can't judge the lineup when it's no where near complete.

Anyone here been to / going to prospect camp?

I always find it amazing , that "Oh this isnt a playoff team" Talk and we have not even seen July 1st yet .

Can't believe anyone is upset that Shaw was traded when you see the contract he got from MTL

I do agree that sometimes it is nerve wracking not know what the full roster is going to be but maybe 1 or 2 of the Higs will be ready to play this year.

Hey , Shaw was an icehog for 2 years ! He developed . It happens.

HEy , whats Erickson going to get in the open market ?

Im suprised we have nit heard his name attached to the Hawks. You ;ve got to figure he is more of a 2nd tier option after Ladd and Lucic but better than McGinn . Maybe Lou Erickson could be that 5 years at 4.5 m type

Heard a lot of interest in Erickson though. Could they get him for a reasonable amount?

EDIT: a quick Google search found Erickson linked to Vancouver, Detroit and Dallas

DSP has been with two or three teams already, and has not stuck. Not saying pass, but he might have a rough time with Q.
