Just ask me one questions and I wake up the next day with more answers...
When you asked me the question and said Russian, you meant Boris Katchouk a Vancouver-born son of a Russian olympic skater, not German Rubtsov...
So the question was really..."...Did I think they wanted a future replacement for Shaw in Katchouk...over DeBrincat..."
I think every NHL team scouts knew DeBrincat was a very special scorer and Boris was a gritty player on the climb, and also close to a first rounder.
Do I think the Blackhawks would have picked Katchouk over Brincant had he not been selected in the pick before by Tampa?
Apparently Stevie Yzerman did, or was afraid of the possiblity of having two little people in the forward lines with DeBrincat and Tyler Johnson. (Don't believe the yearbooks and rosters that have him more than five foot eight...every small guy ever playing in the NHL seems to grow an inch or so after being drafted or opening day, in print.
I have a feeling the Hawks had DeBrincat higher on their list with knowing their furture need for scoring, and seeing Conor Sheary had a big impact in their run/team.
Had Katchouk slide to 45, I am pretty sure they take him there and forgo taking one of the other of their next two picks until later, or forgo taking Artur Kayumov at all, or even passing on the quick burst press defender who needs to learn to play dee in Chad Krys.
But their are an amazing amount of plusses in the selection of DeBrincat.
He is a little like Nic Petan of the Jets who I pooh-poohed as an option, but after seeing Petan play in the NHL, it's clear he belongs.
DeBrincat has a special nose and feel for the attack, and we can all laugh when he says he is "a poor forward," well, he kinda IS.
He rarely gets hit, and maybe it's the case like with football running backs and the idea of low center of gravity on the bowling ball type.
But there is not freaking way you or I can discount how he simply wins the battles in the "battle areas" and has that special IQ and sense to slip into the soft areas before they opposition knows it and FINISHES.
(I have a good friend and ever since the Blackhawks took Teravainen, he has used the words "set-up guy" in every sentence he used TT's name.)
This kid is a finisher. He is so darn short area quick, he is outside the right circle, the puck rebound he set's up elsewhere, darts back the the center slot that was vacated for the pass, etc.
And "the gnat" takes the puck away from players, he beats them, he bodies with them and he gets the puck. When he has to, like Panarin they lose those battles to try and regain it from him.
That is a lot praise, and it is not rah rah stuff I spew as a hawk fan boy.
Sure, his success was tied to great elite junior players, but that doesn't diminish that he also is not a great junior player. Most guys put out their with star juniors do not cash in on the opportunities.
Some are anxious to see Schmaltz on the wing with Toews...me, I want to see thus kid there lined up with Toews and Hossa on the PP, or with the Kane line with 88 starting as the point man.
DeBrincat is fearless.
and Artur Kayumov is a mean tough little guy too who has more anchor right now that TT seem to have last year.
With most of the prospects in this draft you figure there are only a few who win jobs in the NHL quickly (but...the draft is now the pre-eminent CAP relief...)
It seems in all likelihood,
Matthews stays in Toronto,
Patrik Laine, barring a total brainfart in foot movemnet and position also does in Winnipeg,
The beast, Pierre-Luc Dubois is NHL ready...maybe not as a big time scorer, but...
(BTW Montreal had a deal in place to drop down and take him...it wasn't until it fell through the 18 hours prior to the draft that they secured Shaw...b/c they expected to add Dubois as their front presence.)
same goes with Jesse Puljujärvi in Edmonton, if they make some roster space.
Also Matthew Tkachuk and even Logan Brown look like they will basically have to crap the bed to not be playing for Flames/Senators.
And DeBrincat might be the last of "closer than you think" prospects becaus ehe has a rare gift. He takes it away in the front and let's it fly before you know he go it and let it go.
On Krys: He has incredible ste of pistons and gets to top speed really fast.
The issues is he ahs to grow an engagement game and sense when he has to defend,
even in the middle zone.
I don't know if he wa injured, but he just didn't look like he improved from the season before in that area. Was there an hiddem nagging injury? I dunno. Some say that scouting is full of fickle "hat ave you done for me lately" -type evaluators, and because everyone got to see Krys and had an option, they found new flavors and upside in other defenders.
I just know I was one who saw the weaknesses too.
But kids and college - they get to grow in all phases of the sport.
Jimmy vesey WAS clearly a 3rd round pick when Nashville took him...he grew his game to the level that everyody wants to sign him.
So Krys can build on the hockey gifts he has too.
That was again rather long, but hopefully informative...it is just I felt like I missed the party yesterday as I was alone on an island having to do all the parts on DraftSite alone & still pissed that the owner hasn't correct the traded slottings (since he won't give me access..)
