What's the status of his NMC? Does he have one right now or does it kick in before the season starts?
- Mr Ricochet

It depends on if they included a "Jeff Carter clause" - not it's real name obvs, but it's when a NMC can kick in immediately instead of when the contract actually starts. It's a way to entice players to not go UFA. It's just not something that is publicized much, but Getzlaf and Perry were the poster children for getting this after the lockout.

Golf, I appreciate you sharing info when you see it. GF is pretty quick on posting new UFA and RFA signings and if it's there you can be sure it's legit. Top left of the page: http://www.generalfanager.com/

Tough to find that NMC info. I see a guy like Subban's NMC kicks in an a week or so and I wondered if that might be true with AA and if that's a weight in the move him now side of the scale.

Thanks for the info just the same.

There's two ways the 'Hawks can approach the off-season from here:

- TommyHawk

The day will come when they restructure or tweak the model and core and make it younger and if they plan on signing Panarin that will be step 1. Simply can't keep him without moving a core piece, pick one. Or as you mention move him for whatever younger assets or picks you can get and reload as best as possible to an aging 7 core players (minus AA) that eat 67% of the cap. It will only get harder as the core ages, especially Hossa.

As JJ mentioned as is they will simply slide into mediocrity and I'd add or worse.

Someone for about half the amount and use the other money elsewhere....I would take a chance those two wingers will be able to produce with someone not as good as AA.

Way safer and easier than dealing Crawford or Seabrook.

I've always liked Frans Nielsen, flies under the radar. I'd like to see what he could do in that 2C spot if it were vacated. At 32 years old, does he get much of a bump off his current $2.75M AAV contract?

Time to comb the rosters for this year's Eager, Sopel, Handzus, Richards.
I hope there is a plan that is being executed, but I think each new day Stan's white board starts white.
(And I admit I was wrong about being able to keep Ladd. All three second round picks are wearing #16, so that was the clincher.)

About 15 minutes of the CHL Top Prospects Game. Debrincat is 14 in the red. The more I see of that Frenchy with 3 names drafted by CLB the more I like the beast. 18 in the white. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr2--sX45E4

Only post for tonight as the gang is coming over for some shenanigans

I could not be more happy about getting Alex Debrincat at 39. Watched his entire 11minute highlight video from the 15/16 season (No McDavid on his line) and besides his uncanny ability to find the twine, it was WHERE he scored a large portion of his goals from....inside the hashmarks and around the blue paint. Strome is an excellent passer, no doubt, but this kid has a fantastic release, looks solidly built for his height (considering he's 5'7" he weighs as much as Tuevo did at 5'11"). I think this is no-risk move bc he was ranked 29 by TSN (not sure where you had him Wiz) and you cant pass on a Righty sniper like that (future 2LW??). Very happy with him and glad they took the USANDT Dman in the 2nd. Hopefully the large goalie from Belgium can be something down the line and TWT what the Rusky dangler can do in 3 years. Considering where Stan sat at the end of the STL series regarding draft picks this year and next, very good to somewhat restock the cupboard this weekend. Put me down as buying the hype for Debrincat. Why? Bc Tuevo did it on the big ice, while Debrincat did it in the top Junior Hockey league in the world, the OHL. Solid day for StanBo, after looking into those 2nd rounders. Have a good night all! Go Hawks!

The 16 is for 2016 - every kid selected this year had a number 16 jersey. The numbers are always the year.

Yep...he's small. The Hawks have some big boys in the system...Hayden, Calnan, Bondra, but they are still works in progress. However, I think all 3 are decent prospects

Thanks Wiz, really appreciate the efforts you put in on this stuff.

When you are done attending to the site, be interested what you think overall of the selections. I can read about the guys on the site, but curious what you think of the draft overall, and maybe picks where you thought hey they can get this guy, and they passed on them.

I know you were high on the guy who went right before the Russian and the one who went after krys.

- vabeachbear

I actually tried to answer this about 4:00 p.m. but it somehow got erased.
I was really thinking what happened would happen, that most the scouting staffs would go off the beaten paths and start mining for gold fairly early and that seemed to be the case. I thought I had a handle on what were basically safre decent developmental projects and then suddenly my board explodes with teams taking defenseman because they are right handed, players because the are large, and rushing to make sure they don't lose out on their pet guys so they take them really early.

A sfar as the Hawks go, I think we can make a solid guess that they where looking forshifty forwards who can play in small space and score with a quick strike, a speedy (2 strides and Krys is gone because he has super leg drive) press type defender, and a big developmental goalie.
A short but still growing Nathan Noel who also understands how back side check like a typical Hawk forward
After those top four picks, they took a big Dane who has tools feet and edge.

“The way our team is constructed and the way it looks, we’re going to need a lot of young guys or some inexpensive free agents,” coach Joel Quenneville said.

Can someone please explain why Mark McNeill doesn't make most hypothetical dream rosters, seems now more than ever should be his chance more so then 5"5 guys like Hinostroza and a couple of others. I hope the kid makes it. God knows we need at least 1 over 6 foot player up front in the next wave of Hawk futures .
I" ll give them this year to see how they make this work but if they go in the tank of mediocrity and start looking like a team on the decline towards late 90's status, I"m not sticking around as far as a season tix holder shelling out over 10K a year to watch that crap again. Not being only a couple of years away from Medicare eligibility, I "ll do like all the other old dinasours , watch from my couch and maybe do 1game a year! Not gonna be suckered in twice. Have had tix since the Bobby Hull era. So " you're up up Stan!"
But then again ,maybe that's what they want, guys like me to bail out and be replaced by the 20 something's with deep pockets.

I wanna have a do over on the question to me on whether the Hawks should have picked the guys I THOUGHT would be there ahaead of the ones they did pick:

What I am starting to think is even though the Hawks had a list best player available, I think that they picked the guys they were targeting.

When their head scout says they had Wouter Peeters and Artur Kayumov in Chicago for a visit prior to the draft, that they had their sights on them, and since they are Euros, they were gauging the players interests and wanted them comfortable, and ready for suggestions on where to play, when to come etc.
(Forgot about how long their present contracts are for...there are plenty ways to "buy" them...)

...and DeBrincat had a Lake Forest Academy connection (He scored 50 goals there too, lol) in suburban Chicago
and every year there seems to be a close tie that Mark Kelley has with USA hockey and the kids they pick, or they are originally from his home area in Massachusetts...or are Swedish defensemen...even they very last pick Jake Ryczek is a typical hawk deeman, a push the pass press guy.
He is small, but thinks the high pace game and has excellent hands...does he grow? He's 18 so maybe he does...

Just watched that too. In at least half the goals in the video, Debrincat slipped into a soft spot in the defensive zone coverage and put it home when the puck found him. Seems like he's got a knack for getting to the right place without anybody noticing. It's juniors, of course.

Hawks need a 1LW, an entire 3rd line, and another defenseman.

And they have about 5mil to make all of that happen.

Good luck. I can't believe I'm saying this but we might actually be a bubble team...

No, keep Verstupid away from the team. Given how uncertain our defensive depth is we can't afford to have him trying to stickhandle his way through three people and turning the puck over 10+ times a game.

Hawks to approach Jamie McGinn's agent on 7/1.

Out on Lucic, "unless there's a trade of (a larger contract player)" to make him affordable.

Also, for the first time I have heard that they will talk to Campbell's agent. To this point, I have only heard of Campbell's interest in the Hawks. But that will only get done if Campbell comes very cheap.

- John Jaeckel

Mcginn would be awesome in a Hawks jersey. Could fill the void of shaw in many ways and knows the western conference game well.

Really with the veteran talent we have a bubble team? We will have 2 solid scoring lines and 2 solid checking lines that will chip in some goals also a goalie that is in top 5 in the league. The rookie defenseman gained a lot of experience last year that will only help. We also have 1 intangible we know how to win. Playoff team for sure Stanley Cup Championship team? Time will tell. I am really looking forward to this season have some faith.

Just ask me one questions and I wake up the next day with more answers...
When you asked me the question and said Russian, you meant Boris Katchouk a Vancouver-born son of a Russian olympic skater, not German Rubtsov...

So the question was really..."...Did I think they wanted a future replacement for Shaw in Katchouk...over DeBrincat..."

I think every NHL team scouts knew DeBrincat was a very special scorer and Boris was a gritty player on the climb, and also close to a first rounder.

Do I think the Blackhawks would have picked Katchouk over Brincant had he not been selected in the pick before by Tampa?

Apparently Stevie Yzerman did, or was afraid of the possiblity of having two little people in the forward lines with DeBrincat and Tyler Johnson. (Don't believe the yearbooks and rosters that have him more than five foot eight...every small guy ever playing in the NHL seems to grow an inch or so after being drafted or opening day, in print.

I have a feeling the Hawks had DeBrincat higher on their list with knowing their furture need for scoring, and seeing Conor Sheary had a big impact in their run/team.

Had Katchouk slide to 45, I am pretty sure they take him there and forgo taking one of the other of their next two picks until later, or forgo taking Artur Kayumov at all, or even passing on the quick burst press defender who needs to learn to play dee in Chad Krys.

But their are an amazing amount of plusses in the selection of DeBrincat.
He is a little like Nic Petan of the Jets who I pooh-poohed as an option, but after seeing Petan play in the NHL, it's clear he belongs.
DeBrincat has a special nose and feel for the attack, and we can all laugh when he says he is "a poor forward," well, he kinda IS.

He rarely gets hit, and maybe it's the case like with football running backs and the idea of low center of gravity on the bowling ball type.
But there is not freaking way you or I can discount how he simply wins the battles in the "battle areas" and has that special IQ and sense to slip into the soft areas before they opposition knows it and FINISHES.
(I have a good friend and ever since the Blackhawks took Teravainen, he has used the words "set-up guy" in every sentence he used TT's name.)
This kid is a finisher. He is so darn short area quick, he is outside the right circle, the puck rebound he set's up elsewhere, darts back the the center slot that was vacated for the pass, etc.
And "the gnat" takes the puck away from players, he beats them, he bodies with them and he gets the puck. When he has to, like Panarin they lose those battles to try and regain it from him.

That is a lot praise, and it is not rah rah stuff I spew as a hawk fan boy.

Sure, his success was tied to great elite junior players, but that doesn't diminish that he also is not a great junior player. Most guys put out their with star juniors do not cash in on the opportunities.

Some are anxious to see Schmaltz on the wing with Toews...me, I want to see thus kid there lined up with Toews and Hossa on the PP, or with the Kane line with 88 starting as the point man.

DeBrincat is fearless.

and Artur Kayumov is a mean tough little guy too who has more anchor right now that TT seem to have last year.

With most of the prospects in this draft you figure there are only a few who win jobs in the NHL quickly (but...the draft is now the pre-eminent CAP relief...)

It seems in all likelihood,
Matthews stays in Toronto,
Patrik Laine, barring a total brainfart in foot movemnet and position also does in Winnipeg,
The beast, Pierre-Luc Dubois is NHL ready...maybe not as a big time scorer, but...
(BTW Montreal had a deal in place to drop down and take him...it wasn't until it fell through the 18 hours prior to the draft that they secured Shaw...b/c they expected to add Dubois as their front presence.)

same goes with Jesse Puljujärvi in Edmonton, if they make some roster space.

Also Matthew Tkachuk and even Logan Brown look like they will basically have to crap the bed to not be playing for Flames/Senators.

And DeBrincat might be the last of "closer than you think" prospects becaus ehe has a rare gift. He takes it away in the front and let's it fly before you know he go it and let it go.

On Krys: He has incredible ste of pistons and gets to top speed really fast.
The issues is he ahs to grow an engagement game and sense when he has to defend, even in the middle zone.

I don't know if he wa injured, but he just didn't look like he improved from the season before in that area. Was there an hiddem nagging injury? I dunno. Some say that scouting is full of fickle "hat ave you done for me lately" -type evaluators, and because everyone got to see Krys and had an option, they found new flavors and upside in other defenders.

I just know I was one who saw the weaknesses too.

But kids and college - they get to grow in all phases of the sport.
Jimmy vesey WAS clearly a 3rd round pick when Nashville took him...he grew his game to the level that everyody wants to sign him.

So Krys can build on the hockey gifts he has too.

That was again rather long, but hopefully informative...it is just I felt like I missed the party yesterday as I was alone on an island having to do all the parts on DraftSite alone & still pissed that the owner hasn't correct the traded slottings (since he won't give me access..)
