Those numbers show McLeod can drive possession. Weird sample sizes though.

Also calming down on the pick and moving past it. I know he is compared to Kesler but I haven't seen it yet in his highlights. I am hoping ( not thinking ) he turns into more of a Matt Duchene type of player.

If he turned into Gomez in his prime that wouldn't be bad either. He could really carry the puck into the other teams offensive zone before he left the Devils.

His only bad trait isn't even a bad one, because its so coachable. Especially in a Hynes system. He skates "too fast" where he gets into trouble because he gets ahead of everything. If that is his worst trait, that's great to me. This was a Hynes pick. This is a system pick and it'll work. Kid has the size to fill in, and he has Hagelin speed. I like it, personally.

Main thing I cought from that article K-Dizz posted:

"Mississauga’s Michael McLeod was my favourite player to watch all season. His end-to-end rushes were exhilarating, and his speed game was a joy to watch. He needs work on his shot, and sometimes he is guilty of getting a bit too creative, but it all comes back to that skating; it’s going to carry him a long way, even if the top-six offensive game doesn’t materialise.

Logan Brown is one player I have always disagreed with the scouts on. His size is tremendous, and he has the potential to be a game changer, but too often I found myself wondering when he was going to kick into gear. He spent far too much time on the periphery of plays, and for a guy his size, he was often muscled off of pucks in board battles. His talent is undeniable, but he’s got a lot of things to put together before he should be considered a total package."

Looking at those paragraphs - thinking about what Hynes would say their decision here makes a little more sense.

Something to watch for is Cam Dineen is still on the board after the first round. I am still hoping for another forward pick but if we make a deal for a top six forward today then it changes things.

Shero is thinking long term. McLeod at his age now has size and speed, two things that can't be taught. In a couple years, he can very well be a big part of New Jerserys roster. Everybody wants to add scoring that obvious, but dept is just as important. Shero wanted Jost at 11 I am sure and once Colorado snagged him, McLeod was the obvious choice. Shero isn't drafting JUST for next season he is drafting for the long haul. Fact of the matter is that no one available at 12 this year would have been NHL ready anyway. He could always add scoring for the 2016 season through free agency and trades. This kid is gonna give opposing defenses nightmares with his slick skating and drive.

I like where it says "too creative" also - Him and Zacha could be a great combo of speed, size and creativity.

I've been looking at forwards all year, but everything I read about Dineen screams Gelinas. Is that far off?

I don't think anyone was hoping to get an NHL ready player at 12 or 11 but I think a lot of us wanted someone who might of had a higher upside or who was more of a purely offensive type of player vs someone who gets mentioned as a two way player in every report.

I've also read "one speed", poor finisher, tentative shot.

He's a Devil now, and I really hope I'm wrong. But I think one day we are going to say wow, we could have had Brown, Provorov and Sprong, but we have Zacha, McLeod and Blackwood.

I will happily eat a ton of crow on that last statement though.

I have no idea. I know he is a lot smaller then gelinas so you likely never have that hope of him maybe getting a physical game as he gets older like we did with Gelly but he might be smarter then Gelly lol

Forgot about Bitten, wouldn't be a bad pick. Smallish, but plays RW and has a good shot.

Ottawa's '16 3rd. we have 3 3rd round picks. Should've went up for Keller. Idk why we wouldn't trade up. Give our 2nd-7ths + an average prospect and get up to take a potential franchise player. instead we keep all these meh picks that if we're lucky will amount to a top 6 player.. if we're lucky. pointless. We won't suck every year, so when we're in or near the top 10 I think we HAVE to go for it. blah.

I do think we did really well with our third round pick last year. Speers has been great so far and he might have a chance of being a top six forward.

Why do we never trade up ? Absolutely no problem trading down to get guys but we can't trade up we couldn't afford to lose a fifth it would take to move in the first three picks of the second round. I get their might not be much difference now till about the third round but still excite us instead of making us go meh or ugh.
