Why? They get 7.5 cap space off the books and now can use that for Stamkos. Brilliant deal IMO. Don't understand it from Phoenix's perspective. They did Detroit a huge favor, but have to surrender a second rounder next year too boot.
- Oneonta Penguin

Arizona is trying to save as much money as possible. So they now have 7.5 million towards cap floor that they do not have to pay. They are tight on money, so waiting until they are really good before they need to spend.

If you include Pronger, they now can be 12 mil under the cap floor this year and still be legal in NHL rules.

Some people don't seem to understand that trading Murray would be a better option than exposing him to the expansion draft if it came down to that
- willi

Yes, smart trading the goalie that helped you win the Cup and keep the goalie who sustained two concussions in two months and usually craps the bed during the play-offs.

So Dats is their highest paid forward (although they're not paying). Pronger is the 3rd highest D.

Somebody mentioned abortions earlier. That franchise is an abortion.

Seriously! And why is the NHL expanding when there are teams pulling that kind of crap.

Never understand that rule. So, Detroit is still on the hook to pay Pavel 7.5, but Arizona takes the cap hit?

I hope Philly trades out of the 1st round and they don't get Jones.

The NHLPA really fuked up with allowing that garbage. That is money not going into a player's pocket.

No one pays Pavel. He not in NHL, so no one pays him. This rule was put in for teams that gave 13-14 yr contracts to circumvent the salary cap. So when people retire 7 years before retirement, they still have to keep the salary cap hit. Hossa is a great example.

No money is being paid because Dats went to Russia. But Zona gets to count the cap hit for the floor. Pronger I believe is still being paid however.

No one actually pays the 7.5. He forfeits that for not playing in the NHL. His KHL team will be the one paying him.

Trading Murray would make more sence than exposing him to the expansion draft...

OK, so the GM of the Pens states emphatically that he doesn't want to trade MAF right now.

Fleury says he is in no great rush to be traded.

The Flames kick the tires, and don't want to give up #6 (which turns out to be a decent price, since the much, much worse Brian Elliott gets their high #2 plus another #2).

MAF is a Penguin at draft day.

So why all the gnashing teeth and renting of clothes? It's exactly what looked like what was going to happen.

Pens have about $3-4 million in cap space to play with right now. let's see what happens. They need a 3rd line D with a R shot, and maybe some experienced F depth. They can get that with their cap space.

June 2017 is a long way away.

- PensFan1962

Thats the wrong attitude and loser mentality. You are just asking for the worst to happen if you are not preemptive in getting things done.

Thanks all ... definitely favors Detroit. Now, they can go spend $$$. Must be nice to be able to make a few roster moves to help.

Trading MAF would make more sense because you don't have to trade Murray; you don't have to worry about losing your top goalie in expansion and you save $$ in the process, enough to make some changes. Not a hard concept.

Don't get the people who think keeping MAF is a good thing and prefer trading the better, more controllable and cheaper goalie. That isn't smart.

If Fleury is still here next year he will be the starting goalie. Just because you hate Fleury doesnt change that he is the better goalie.

I'm being realistic, I hope for the best but expect the worst. The more you set yourself up for the worst to happen the less you can expect anything else.

Who says I hate him? I have his jersey. I have defended him for years. However, I have come to the conclusion after watching Murray and what he did ... now is the time to move MAF because we have a better, younger goalie. MAF doesn't win the Cup for us this year IMO if he was healthy.

Our organization would make a major mistake by not dealing MAF.

I am not so sure about that, he will have to win the position. Sullivan has proven that he will sit players (Cole) and give younger players the opportunity to earn playing time.

We could always trade Murray if we are getting down to the wire. It isnt like Fleury is an anchor.
- stackthepads

Yeah trade the 22 year old, better player with a 2 decade career ahead of him for a guy who could accidentally hit his head on a low hanging sign and be done forever. Thats a great idea. More MAF meltdowns please. Especially the games he gives up a bad goal and you know he's giving up the next one too. More years of this BS please https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQGz9UoKOKo

Meh. While I do think the wisest move was to trade Marc this weekend, to the bolded, Murray didn't face a ton of shots. Team defense was incredible for most of the playoffs.
