Two years ago, despite the stats, calgary was a competent team on the raise. Last year, it had many of the same pieces, but was an abortion. I look at it sort of like Francisco Liriano on the mound. Looks dominant because people chased balls all the time. Now that people have figure him out, he sucks.
Still think Calgary is ahead of Edmonton. I would take Elliott over Talbot; Calgary's defense over Edmonton's (hell, I would take some AHL teams D over Edmonton's) and they have some good forwards too boot. It all depends on how they adjust to the new coach. - Oneonta Penguin
It really depends on what Edmonton gives up to get a 1RHD. That could be a game changet. |

Edmonton has enough trade chips to get almost any player in the league without crippling their team. Other than McDavid anyone can be moved.

And Calgary wasn't going to bow over and overspend on our backup, nor should they have. 6th overall pick was totally delusional to think. I'm not even sure JR even has talked to Fleury about the possibility of being moved, hence the dumb response. Was Elliott the best possibility? No, but our GM didn't help the cause by asking for an obscene return for a guy that isn't worth that. - Oneonta Penguin
Wow, Im kind of blown away by this. I just see Elliott as a stop gap & chances are we will be back in the market for a goalie next year. We kind of got forced into this, both Yzerman & JR were asking for the #6 & we badly need Tkachuk on our team. The silver lining is we may be talking about this again next year & I think the price for both Fleury & Bishop will be significantly less than the #6. With Elliott being just 2.5 mill next year, we suddenly have lots of cap space. Personally, I thought MAF was the perfect fit, 3 years would have set us up with good goaltending & a window to get Gilles into the NHL. I like 1 year of Elliott instead of probably 4 years of Reimer. I happy we didn't have to spend the #6 but feel a little empty we just have a short term bridge. #35 & a 3rd rounder would have been totally acceptable for MAF. |

We have seen this movie before regarding Edmonton. Lots of trade chips - all talk. Let's see. I think they are fools to move Draistl. |

Fleury would have been nice. I do wonder if he refused to waive though. I got to think JR came down on his asking price slightly. - FLflames34
I don't think Rutherford wanted to trade him unless he got a great deal. He thinks he can solve the expansion draft later. I hope he's right. |

Great pick by the Wild. Saw Kunin play against PSU four times and he can play. |

FWIW - I saw Jason Mackey said this to someone who asked a question about Yakupov:
" I like him a lot. I know GMJR does, too. Tried to get him in 2014-15, but Edmonton wasn't selling. At least at a reasonable rate."
Maybe I'm forgetting, was there talk in previous years of trying to acquire him? Or is this interesting insider info? |

Blown away by my comments, or blown away that we didn't trade MAF to you, or the asking price?
I made mention that elliott was a ufa after this coming year and then you could figure it out then, if he is an answer or if Gillies is ready. Then again, Gillies missed most of the season, so you have to wonder if the timeline for him is pushed back another year or so. |

That's the way I see it as well. If GMJR was blown away with a offer he then asks Fleury if he's willing to go there If no offer comes in the deal with the Fleury situation later. |

OK, so the GM of the Pens states emphatically that he doesn't want to trade MAF right now.
Fleury says he is in no great rush to be traded.
The Flames kick the tires, and don't want to give up #6 (which turns out to be a decent price, since the much, much worse Brian Elliott gets their high #2 plus another #2).
MAF is a Penguin at draft day.
So why all the gnashing teeth and renting of clothes? It's exactly what looked like what was going to happen.
Pens have about $3-4 million in cap space to play with right now. let's see what happens. They need a 3rd line D with a R shot, and maybe some experienced F depth. They can get that with their cap space.
June 2017 is a long way away. |

As a team, Calgary was an abortion. No typo. That is why they picked where they did. They weren't good. - Oneonta Penguin
That was just mean. They did beat us twice and finished ahead of five teams. |

Bishop to Dallas is an even more thing. Yzerman needs the cap space big time to try to sign Stamkos. He'll get some in this goalie swap. |

They dropped back 4 spots and a 2nd next year to lose 7.5 mil in cap space. I think that is a great trade for Detroit. |

I feel like Tampa, even moreso than the Penguins, would want to clear cap space. I dont see Tampa liking trading Bishop and only netting $1M or so in cap space.

I'm not sold on Brian Elliott, he's a one year rental before he goes UFA. Maybe Calgary looks at MAF later in the year as we approach the deadline, trying to get him at a bargain rate. |
