Sorry dude, I didn't mean to offend you.

Sounds like JR is resolute that MAF is staying. At least to start the season with the Pens.
- madmike71

Rutherford and Flowers agent have apparently had conversations. So if he is still on the team by expansion draft time maybe he would want to waive the nmc to be somewhere else. Talking to the agent is a very good thing. It could make the agent encourage Flower to waive the clause. I mean it'd be in the agents be interest. If Flower plays one year in Vegas and is good he will be way more likely to get a good contract there than any other team.

Also I heard the NHL might let Vegas have a trading period before the expansion draft. So again he'd need to maybe waive it but they could maybe trade flower to them for almost anything so they can protect Murray. They have very little reason to want to do it but maybe they like someone else on the pens too and will want this.

Well, as we talked about yesterday, it takes 3 entities to make a deal. MAF, Pens and a buyer. It's quite possible MAF isn't "on board" with a move and/or there aren't any buyers. It's not all on Ruth.
- madmike71

Calgary was a buyer and by all accounts Ruth spurned them and they frugally got a year of Eliot to put off making the decision for next to nothing. That's on Ruth.

If its a no interest issue, that is on JR for his high price tag on a goalie that isn't worth a high price tag. Fig its on MAF, he will look foolish if Murray is our starting goalie and he will be on the bench. Bad decision by either one.

Yep, major mistake by our GM. Absolutely foolish. So, we will be inactive on the FA market. He might have just pulled all the right moves for us to win the Cup recently, but this is a new year and its starting off poorly from a decision making standpoint.
- Oneonta Penguin

Well a lot of people had ? For him right when he made those choices last year... How bout we see how these turn out next season. Calgary sounds like they didn't even make an offer for Fleury.

I hear you and I partially agree with you. I think thats a good 4th or 5th round pick. But with few top end draft choices, I'd rather go for a higher upside. There are plenty of ways to get a 3rd pairing defenseman or bottom 6 forward. I'd rather go for boom or bust high end potential than safe picks that are easy to pick up.
- YouMeAndDupuis9

I wouldn't mind that either. I don't know that there are many boom players in the 3rd, but I don't know any of these guys.

Well I like the 4th round pick for selfish reasons because I'll be able to watch him first hand. Nebraska-Omaha has had a Pens prospect for at least the last 5 or 6 years.(Jayson Megna, Josh Archibald, Jake Guentzel, and now Ryan Jones)

The way I understand the second part, if Murray has to be exposed, Pittsburgh can work out a deal with LV so they don't pick Murray, like a 1st round pick and then LV chooses another player off our list, so we get killed.

I don't think so

Keeping Fleury is better than retaining salary, or taking back a Niemi type contract

If we want to have dead money (by retaining salary, or having an overpaid guy return in the trade) I'd rather keep Fleury and gamble that a market develops

This won't ever cost us Murray, if it ever came down to the final hours and we absolutely couldn't move Fleury, he will get bought out and Murray would be protected

I'd rather gamble with that than receive a 2nd round pick or some BS

Fleury is still a great goalie, and we could need him if Murray went down with injury

You can say Calgary didn't make an offer ... I can say JR gave Calgary what he wanted and it was obscene. We will never hear the true story, but I believe this was on JR, not Calgary.

And we dont know if Fleury blocked a trade to them. Even if there never was one we maybe should be grateful that Rutherford isn't taking the huge risk of putting everything on Murrray possibly to soon. What we've seen form Murray is not proof he can handle starting an entire season. Lets all calm down with this armchair GMing.

#6 too much, #35 not enough

If Calgary had a mid round pick maybe a deal gets done

Need didn't match value for either side

Elliot isn't the answer, he's gonna get exposed without Hitchcocks defensive structure in front of him and Calgary will realize they are in the same boat about mid way thorough next season

I would have gauged interest in their 2017 1st rounder and see if that would have worked

So, if he blocked it, doesn't seem like he wants to be a starting goalie. He would be starting in calgary. It would suck for him being Murray's backup here.

I thought the best option was for Calgary to trade back into the mid first round and gain some picks, then trade the mid round pick for Fleury. Maybe they didnt have a trade down option on the table though.

Expansion draft sucks. Yes. But we can whine about it like this or have faith in the GM of the year.

35 was a good return, or the last two Calgary second round picks. He isn't worth a mid 1st round pick.

I don't know man, blaming Ruth for something that we have no idea about the real story seems silly to me. Especially for a guy that just won a cup with several very shrewd deals......mid season deals too.

Don't matter... don't care if one team needed a goalie. It's all about patience in mgmt. If you don't got it you will get burned.

Did JR just say we don't have cap issues ... but we have 1 million of cap space available? No Jim, you have cap issues. You don't have the cap space to make a decent change.
