I guess. Maybe it's just the eating dead contracts thing that irks me. Just that $54M is a big gap from $73M and there's a lot of $$ that could be spent that could help them now. If they keep trying to just get to the cap floor, they'll never be able to compete for a Cup. Maybe there's a long term plan that will get them to be competitive in a few years, I don't know. - BestEpisodeEver
There's a long term plan. If they committed cap and term to bets last year they still probably wouldn't have made the playoffs. Yotes are still a bit out. Signing Gogo was a good move |

Dude you can't go to war 6/7 d deep... That's our problem we have no one in WBS. We have to fit more D under the cap. - Victoro311
War doesn't start till the playoffs. GMJR will be doing some tweaking in the offseason and during the season. There are contracts that can be moved and cheap 6/7 guys that can be brought in for WBS/depth.

We have disagreed for a major part of our times on this board. However, its seems as though we are the lone two who really care about this organization not on a year to year basis, but the future. Everyone else is geared to year to year and the hell with down the road. Otherwise, they would understand the right move to make.
I see another Vancouver situation brewing here. That isn't a good thing. - Oneonta Penguin
Well I agree with you too. Makes no sense to keep MAF around. Like you, I'm always worried about the long term health. You can't get sentimental, you just worry about getting better for the long road. That's how good teams stay good. You trade guys who still have value but are aging for younger assets. Josh Yohe's article says it best:
BUFFALO, N.Y. — There are many good reasons for the Penguins to trade Marc-Andre Fleury.
• This would eliminate the possibility of losing Matt Murray in the expansion draft
• It would allow both goaltenders to rightfully be full-time starters
• It would remove any awkwardness that might be felt between Fleury and Murray moving forward
• It would give the Penguins $5.75 million of cap room
Unfortunately he also wrote:
There’s only one problem with all of this: Jim Rutherford is in no rush to trade Fleury and insisted on Friday night that he would like keep both goaltenders entering the 2016-17 season. |

Fleury and Murray will be sharing the load next season...this is good for the team, there will be drama built up by the media but the team will have solid goaltending... Injuries happen. JR knows what he's doing. |

I am operating on the assumption that Fleury is going to ask to be traded. Being a backup in the final two years of a contract is going to cost him 15-20 million dollars. Anti Niemi aside that is the chasm between starters and backups.
Also, if his wife is okay with that he has a better one than mine. My wife gets mad if I turn down overtime. |

And if Fleury is the one to get seriously injured??
Disaster scenario is MAF tears an ACL midseason..... if we put him on LTIR so save cap space then we can't trade him until he's healthy based on the CBA.... and then unless he waives the NMC.... 100% goodbye Murray.... gone for nothing and we're left with 32 year old Fleury coming off ACL rehab.
A lot of bad things can happen in the next year. |

I'm all for Flower being traded (I'm thinking through next season), but anything can happen. Imagine Murray tears an ACL next season early & we've traded Flower already? We have player X to be in goal (X = Zatkoff, Jarry or equivalent), till Murray recovers or we 'trade' for another starter. Can go both ways.
You are correct though, anything can happen.
It actually brings up the question - can a player that's injured or on ltir be exposed to the expansion draft? |

Perhaps BB gets packaged with one of those 2nd rounders to move up some and get a player the Pens really like? Im not talking a 20 pick jump, but I could see getting into the mid 40s to get someone. I also wouldn't be against them dropping down from one of those picks to pick up a 3rd and maybe a 3rd next year. They need to start to restock the farm teams. |

I guess rethinking the matter....Pronger got traded so LTIR can be moved but they definitely cannot be bought out.... not that I'm advocating crippling our cap for years with a buyout.
But it's a scary proposition knowing Fleury could basically pick the 18 teams right up against the cap and block a deal either forcing a buyout or losing Murray.

If Flower picked teams that were low chances of trading for him, JR would have to work the phones & get a three way trade happening. It would be difficult but not impossible unless Flower keeps his LTC with the new team (they would have to reject that which may kill the trade - I have no idea about that).
Why give goalies LTC which virtually make NTC with the teams they select?? Seems a little naive. Just give them NTC or nothing. |

You really need to quit freaking out over this. We are in better shape defensively than we were last year.
Maata/letang had injury concerns. Pouliot was a year younger. Scuderi was a deadweight. Dumoulin was penciled in or top 4 and had limited experience. Lovejoy and Cole are not lying special.
Last year we didn't even have a guaranteed top 4 guy. Check that we did not have one legit top 4 guy on the roster who did not have health concerns.
Now you complaining about only have 6 NHL defenseman. We will be fine and have plenty of time to figure it out. We need to add a Taylor chorney type to end - a super minor leaguer who can't quite hold down a 6d spot. But the issues are small. |

Check my reply below. Last year we had "zero" top 4 dmen on the roster who did not have health concerns. Teams having 8 "warriors" in June isn't normal. |
