Trade down is my guess.

Before yost’s abortion, Scott Cullen did a piece on draft pick values. Picks ~30-70 had little difference in value (games played + performance of players). So, to me 2 picks in that range is better than 1.

I assume the leafs have done their own internal analysis. If they trade down again this year, I’m guessing they came to a similar conclusion.

My Habs fan 'friend' told me yesterday that he hopes they trade Subban if the price is right, and that the price wouldn't be that much in the grand scheme of things in his opinion.

Draisaitl and 4th would definitely be worth it I think.

The cap hit will be a massive road block to the team in the near and far future
The team is nowhere near a finished product, Stamkos makes the Leafs good enough to just miss the playoffs during a time when they need bottom 5 finishes.
3-4 of Stamkos' prime years are wasted on a team that is still rebuilding
Lastly, no one knows what this team will be in a year or two, you're blinded by prospect hype.

Leafs have 18 million in salary coming off the books after 2016-2017, with most of the contracts probably replaced by ELCs or 1 million$ deals.
