It's all about what draft year that you got your picks. Leafs did it right with Rielly and Kadri. Edmonton laid a blanket price on all of their top picks, within a couple of years. What was it? $6 million per? You have to do it with reason.

On paying them in future contracts, you have two paths to follow. You can pay them what they're worth, if you are a true Stanley Cup contender, or trade them in their late 20's for a boatload of draft picks, or young players.

Point is – they didn’t look to add any major pieces through trade or free agency.

It’s nearly impossible to draft a team with no holes and hope all those players develop at the same time.

At some point, you add through other means.

I would guess, yes. One way to be more sure would be to call the # in the text msg screen shot.

It's not like it's a high end draft selection. Just negotiating scenario's if it comes to pass. It might get you a Freddie Anderson though, if you look at it through Blue coloured glasses.

I just ate three cheeseburgers...that was my breakfast. Not sure about what 2nd breakfast will be, I'm gonna let the booze make that call.
- Zezel

Breakfast was sausage, bacon and pancakes (with beer). Lunch was jerk chicken (plus champage). Now heading down to lie on the beach for a couple of hours with some red stripe before coming on back in a couple of hours to head to one of the bars of the hotel that seems to be showing the draft. Leafs tee is a little sweaty, but that just adds to the beauty of it all.

Good (frank)ing times people, cheers from the Caribbean!!!

You do, but you have to get to that place in the standings. You have to be a contender to think that way. You'll always have your cornerstone pieces, like Chicago, with Keith, Seabrook, Toews and Kane. You then add free agents to your top 6 and second pair defensive pairings. You use your midlevel draft picks to fill out your bottom 6 and if they have good seasons and require a raise, have someone behind them to back-fill the position and trade them for assets. Chicago has been masterful with that. They have a steady pipeline of second tier players that you can use cheaply. Eventually, you do have to cut players lose, because you can't afford them. Big Buff, Ladd, Versteeg, Saed come to mind.

The resort that we're at is funded primarily by Virgin atlantic vacations and Air Canada/Westjet... I'd estimate about a 75/25 CAN/UK split here...

Has MTL ever signed a UFA?

A couple stiffs like Kovalev and Cammelleri.. and they had to grossly overpay.
No player, not even the French ones want to play in Montreal.

It's a good thing that they can draft and develop...

Chicago is pefect. They added Khabibulin and campbell early on and hossa later.

You add when you need to and when you have opportunities to add for liitle or no assets.
