For you, my Habs fan......lets Bridge Subban, instead of paying him....then let him over-perform, in a strike shorten season and be forced to pay him $9 million + for eternity. Now the Habs can't afford to add Stamkos or any other big time UFA, because of that millstone around their necks.

Yeah, other teams that are losers.....see Oilers! Only way that the Habs can make a splash, is to move PK for assets and pray like hell that someone overpays. Lets keep him right there, so the Habs can stay right where they are in the standings, year after year.

My philosophy is to draft your elite players and keep them on entry level contracts and then buy UFA years, instead of bridging them, for cap friendly money moving forward.......like Rielly. Why allow your adversaries to get out from under a bad contract and pay for past performances?

I could actually see Stamkos in Detroit.

I could also see Detroit selling Datsyuks contract. Was the info I heard correct in that they are saddled with a cap hit for him? If so, Leafs could in theory try to leverage that to try and get a prospect out of them.

It's all about what draft year that you got your picks. Leafs did it right with Rielly and Kadri. Edmonton laid a blanket price on all of their top picks, within a couple of years. What was it? $6 million per? You have to do it with reason.

On paying them in future contracts, you have two paths to follow. You can pay them what they're worth, if you are a true Stanley Cup contender, or trade them in their late 20's for a boatload of draft picks, or young players.
