With all this Subban trade talk...looks like Montreal is out on Stamkos. (The big reason for him going there was his buddy PK.)

So let me get this straight....Buffalo is out because it's a poop hole. Detroit is out because it's a poop hole and they have cap issues. Tampa is out because they have cap issues and had more than enough time to get 'er done.

No cap issues, hometown team, nice young talented team on the rise, #1G in place, no current captain or true team leader except for Laich/Kadri/Koma/Reilly, 4 really good assistant captains......hmmmm.....

Disagree with you. This team is not a good team yet - they finished last overall. They have very strong management, coaching and scouting - this point cannot be argued. They just picked up a really good goalie who won the Jennings trophy last year and signed him for $5 million - which you think is high, but puts him as an average goalie and he is much better than average - an excellent contract. Leafs are going into tomorrows draft with the first overall pick in what is presumed to be a strong group. that's one draft, they picked Marner at #4 last year - he was the best junior in Canada this year - stats, trophies and championship (MVP) back this up. (that's two). They drafted William Nylander the previous year at #8. He is young, fast, skilled and shows strong potential (that's three). They drafted Morgan Rielly at #5 - who is projecting to be an excellent d-man. As evidenced by him being selected to team Canada (ahead of $9.5 million a year Subban) and the North American under 23 squad. (that's four) They also have JVR on their team - a former number 2 pick and a guy that will score 30-40 goals handily with a good center. (that's five) They also have Kadri ( drafted #7 ) starting to show some promise (that's six)

Now there are others worth mentioning - I am only talking about 1st rounders that are NHL caliber players

Gardiner (17th pick) only 25 years old - seven

now we are talking 8 players - not two drafts as you implied - seven skaters and a goalie. If we add a top free agent like Stamkos (former #1 pick) - that would make nine. Nine out of a 23 man roster - only 22 if we drop the backup goalie as solid first rounders with really strong potential. How many of them are on the past four cup winning teams?

How many top picks would you like to see on the team before we "go for it" Show me some teams that have more than 50% of their players drafted in the first round in their lineup.

It's not about picking in the top five only - as clearly evidenced by this chart below

He and his agent are maximizing his term and dollars, because they have all the power.

It's just a waiting game at this point, and if he's not signed this weekend, he's a Leaf.

Yzerman basically gave him a soft deadline by saying he wants some clarity this weekend.

Never knew JVR has a NMC also. Kicks in july 1st too..
