Shaw can play on Mtl' top6, Eller cannot. That's a win. - fidopro
Anyone can play on the top 6 when you don't have a top 6. It's a useless point |

If shaw makes 4.5 and we're stuck with him for 5 years people will eventually hate him more than Eller - ehabs9
I'm taking bets right here right now. |

If Shaw is in our top 6 or a top 6 solution, then this team is not any better. |

We may hate him, but more than Lars "no hockey sense" Eller? Never. |

You are just still jizzing that Eller is gone. When your Richard goes limp, perhaps you will have better judgement.
They should have just stopped at the Eller trade and kept the cap relief. |

I really don't give a poop who is better.
I am saying that the Habs did not have to give up so much for a guy that the Hawks were desperate to dump because of cap concerns. On top of that, if the reports are true, he will have a worse contract than Eller and for 5-6 years.
This is not a win. - Mashadar
The bolded hurts the rest of your argument.
How desperate were the Hawks? How desperate were the Caps to take on Eller? The guy is a polar opposite of Eller which is fine by me. |

in Mtl he will have the chance to prove it.
that's the way to go. you target a fringe top6 player on a good deep team and trade for him so it doen's cost too much, and give him a chance to play 2nd line.
and droping Eller at the same time? well done MB.

They were two separate trades. Everyone is acting like they traded Eller for Shaw.
If Shaw is part of your top 6 you have a poopty top 6. |

Just because you trade Eller and get 2 picks does not mean that you then have to send 2 BETTER 2nd round picks to the Hawks for a bottom 6 player that wants $4.5M.
Why not just flip the Caps picks, which will be at the end of round 2, rather than the 2 low 2nd rounders they have this year?
Plain. Stupid. |

Because that is the immediate impact on the roster. Shaw will have more of an impact than Eller ever did (except for that one game.....)
Worst case scenario, we break even with these 2 deals IMO. |

How?
With 2 worse 2nd round picks?
With overpayment on a contract to a bottom 6 player that will cause a cap crunch?
Not using money to fix our top 6 with a real solution?
Yeah, so much better.
I have been an MB supporter, but this might be the deal that breaks the camel's back.

I've listened to a few scouts say that talent really drops off in this draft after about the 25th pick. Considering what the odds are of contributing as a 2nd round guy to begin with, I don't think trading those 2 picks for a guy about to enter his prime is a big deal.
Even if you give him a 6 year deal, he's at the right age. |

The bottom 6 has too many players! Moving Eller doesn't create a hole you need to fill! Just get the picks and be done with it. You don't need to add shaw! |

Habs are gonna have to trade Chucky, Ghallager and Patches just to make room for all these wonderful 4th line players we are gonna have.
Pathetic. |
