Canucks have ~21 off the books next year with Burrows,Higgins, Miller, Horvat, Hutton, Tryamkin, Gudbranson ,Virtanen and Markstrom.

My guess Gubranson gets 5, Horvat and Hutton gets a bridge of 3, Markstrom gets 4, Tryamkin and Virtanen 2.5.

That equals 20 million. Maybe I am off on my contracts a bit but I don't think there is room for another 6+ million dollar player.

- belcherbd

It's not next years money they would be spending it's the guys coming off now Vrbata's 5mil, Hamhuis' 4.5, Bartkowski's 1.75 and Weber's 1.5, almost 13 mil.

No doubt Lucic is polarizing, but the bigger travesty is watching our star players get RUN every game, over and over and over.. While no one stands up for them. If you get a chance to sign Bertuzzi 2.0, I say go for it.. As for PK I can't begin to describe the intangibles this guy would bring to this team.
- VIRTBOHUT

Polarizing isn't the word I would use. I don't want a guy on my team who is such a sore loser he issues death threats, especially with lots of young players on their way up. Eriksson would make a fantastic role model, and behind him we can sign someone who will stand up for our stars.

I also don't want a guy with an ego the size of a mountain who takes baseball swings at guys wrists.

Total goals last 3 regular seasons: Hartnell 71; Lucic 62
Total points last 3 regular seasons: Hartnell 161; Lucic 158
Hartnell has also played fewer games than Lucic.

I'm not saying Canucks should get Hartnell, but he could be a good value pick-up for some team. He's not just a cap dump.

Thanks for this.

In JB's interview on TSN1040 just now, he sure sounds enamoured with Lucic. To roughly quote; "he brings something our team doesn't have right now; would be a great fit in our top 6."

My hope is he's baiting the Oilers into signing him so we can't have him

My bad, you are right so 20 million coming off and 18 or so used if my guesses are close.

there is a lot of truth in that, nobody in our top 6 plays a physical game, looking to check and play the body. Unless JV is in our top 6, we don't have much physical play.

maybe there are cheaper options though...

Exactly and even after next years expiring contracts come off it will be enough to resign everyone needing a new contract. That leaves basically 10 million to spend without any repercussions.

Lucic 28 yrs old Hartnell 34 yrs old .... so what you're saying is Lucic will be productive for 6 more years?

You also have to factor in the amount they are currently paid and take that off. Of those you mentioned is around 8 million more. So with your projection it's only 12 million additional space needed and we have 13 million coming off to cover it.

I agree, my point is that money that is coming off the books from Miller, Bur etc. will likely be spent re-upping our RFA's and a starting goalie.

I did factor the current salaries in that 20 million.

What I meant is this years cap space won't need to be used for next year's resigning. This year's is free to spend whereverse and not affect anything going forward.

In theory.

You're correct but it still.means we have 9.5 million now to sign UFAs which doesn't affect next year's resigns.

I feel like we are going in circles....I agree with what you are saying. Your original comment I thought had inferred we had a bunch of cap that would also be available once contracts expire.

how many teams are bidding for these ufa's? how much money/cap space is really available around the league?

I don't necessarily like the idea of a consolation prize/signing when it comes to ufa's but we saw it when Franson had big salary demands and then signed for less when the music stopped.

JB sounds totally enamored with Lucic, I hope he shows a little restraint.

Benning on PK Subban: Yeah, we've been one of the teams that have talked to them. It's a high price, he's a true #1 defenseman

Aside from having to deal with what I'm sure will be a very significant cap hit and term, it seems to me that signing Lucic would be a bit hypocritical, given Benning's stance on ensuring his players are all of quality character. Based on what we've seen from Lucic and his behavior over the years, it certainly doesn't look like he fits that type of mould. Wasn't the mandate supposed to be cleaning the locker room of any negative, divisive, and/or troublesome personalities?

Personally, I would rather the Canucks go after either Erikson or Brouwer, or even a guy like Nielsen (who I think is quite underrated). I think the decline in Lucic's play will be sooner than later and we will be stuck with an expensive and unmovable player in several years time.

saw this article pointed out on twitter.

http://www.theglobeandmai...patience/article29522278/

Linden also spoke about making careful acquisitions in the free-agent market: The Canucks made two splashy signings in Linden’s first summer, but this time, the situation is much different, and it might be harder to convince players to come here.

Vancouver has some reasonable salary-cap breathing room, but Linden isn’t interested in signing lengthy deals.

“It’s less about the money and more about the [contract] term, which you’ve got to be careful with,” he said.

Yea I think I was a bit confused originally because of how it started on next year's cap space. Carry on.
