Can you do a buyout and anytime in the season? Reason I ask because, wouldn't it behoove the Rangers to wait and see if last year Girardi's play had to do a lot with injuries. - mdw7413
I don't think so. Its usually a week in the summer like it is right now |

no, there are buyout windows, his one ends June 30th, and if you have a player who goes to arbitration, another two week opens for you in August
and another thing, you can't buyout a player who is injured, so if Girardi suffers a big long term injury this coming season, they could be in trouble and stuck with him, having to protect him in an expansion draft - jimbro83
Thanks Jimbo, all interesting points. I would hate to be Gorton right now. |

For JVR.. - mdw7413
Would have to be a package of picks/prospects. We have forward prospects to spare… |

Long term injury can be placed on LTIR and recoup the cap hit as long as they are out. Why not just do to Staal and Girardi what the league did to Pronger? Wipe the cap hits, give them jobs with the league and put them in the Hall of Fame? |

the problem is still having to protect them in the expansion draft |

You think JVR is there for the rest of his contract, or would Toronto be willing to move him?
I really don't know enough about Toronto's prospects and their projections. |

LTIR does not wipe out the cap hit clean. |

I stand corrected. Details of LTIR.
The league upper limit is $69M. A team has an averaged club salary of $68M and a player with a cap hit of $5M becomes injured and the team places him on LTIR. The team is now permitted to spend up to a new limit of $72M:
Cap hit of LTIR player is $5M
Amount of cap space available to team = $69M - $68M = $1M
Amount team can exceed the cap = $5M - $1M = $4M
New limit = $68M + $4M = $72M |

i think they move JVR this week. I believe he was shut down to recover from injury for this purpose. His NTC also (likely) kicks in july 1. Likely going to out-price himself in Toronto in 2 years.
Priority would be to bring back a dman for JVR imo. |

Interesting. Yeah, if he stays healthy and continues to put up 25-30 g a year, he is going to get paid. |
