They don't have to protect him if Girardi agrees to waive his NMC before the expansion draft. If Girardi waives it keeps his contract intact. If he is bought out he only gets 2/3 of the remaining dollars. That might be motivation to get him to waive.

If I had to guess 5 years 5 million is what he's asking. I'd say 5 years at 4 would be fair but could see 4.5 being the average.

Buyout window for next season will open before you have to name your protected players. Rags would be smart to wait until then and give the ultimatum, waive or get bought out.

no, there are buyout windows, his one ends June 30th, and if you have a player who goes to arbitration, another two week opens for you in August

and another thing, you can't buyout a player who is injured, so if Girardi suffers a big long term injury this coming season, they could be in trouble and stuck with him, having to protect him in an expansion draft
