i just dont think buyouts are necessary
i do think they can move lupul and bozak... might have to pay to do it but its possible
greening and laich make up 2/3rds of a solid third line... allowing a young guy who the leafs project to be in that role play with them... which could give a young winger a lot of knowledge about playing in a checking role - Dozzer
Agreed... No on the buyouts...If Leafs could move out Bernier and Bozak holding onto Lupul for another yr wouldn't really matter.... |

who the (frank) would take bernier at that price?
maaaaaybe calgary... but the leafs would pretty much have to let him go for nothing.... and likely retain some salary |

so they pay a million to get a 5+ million cap hit
thats exactly what a budget team wants - Dozzer
The Savard and pronger deals are pay a couple hundred thousand for a ~$4M caphit.
Even so, the market seems to be changing. florida just paid a 2nd rounder for NJ to take savard’s caphit.

Hopefully Bernier will play well enough as a backup without the pressure of being a number 1 and make himself attractive to a playoff team at the deadline.
However we need more goalies in the pipeline and I hope that Bibeau can continue to improve. I don't think Sparks has what it takes. |

Bernier may be a little cheaper than Fleury or Howard... but he is also a lot worse.
If Calgary had interest in Bernier... why wouldn't they go after Reimer? Seeing as he outperformed Bernier last year and all. |

lupul is movable because unlike horton he is still insurable
a team looking to get to cap floor might be willing to give up a project prospect or a mid round pick
if lupul stays healthy its a win for the team as he still has value as an offensive winger
if he does get hurt then insurance would cover his salary while still allowing his hit to count against the cap
someone will take him - Dozzer
You couldn't give Lupul away.
2 years left at $5.25 cap hit?
He's untouchable. |

but if he gets hurt... as he most likely will... then he goes on the IR and a budget tem gets the 5.25 million but only has to actually pay 1.05 million
basically the leafs sell off a cheap cap hit |

No GM is going to trade Lupul and then hope he gets injured.
Not a single GM.
No budget team is going to take on a guy with $10.5 million left on his contract, hoping he gets injured.

Trading Bernier and retaining salary doesn't really make a lot of sense.
Salary of $4.150 million.
So let's say you agree to eat $1.5 million.
That saves you roughly $2.5 million, but you still need to replace him.
So you sign a stiff for $2 million. You gain $500,000 in cap hit, but you probably have a crappier goalie.
Just have him play backup this year, and never send him a Christmas card again. |

depends on what the leafs are willing to give up to make it happen... they traded clarkson ffs so i can believe anything is possible
a team might be willing to pay 3.5 million for a guy like lupul... well worth retaining salary in a deal to have his off the books as soon as humanly possible |

Mike Augello: Leafs Not Constrained By Cap In Pursuit Of Stamkos - mikeinbuffalo
there not buying out Lupol because we will need cap space when were competitive in 2 to 3 years.
We don't need all the cap space we have (this year) so we won't buy out any one else. greening is overpaid but proved useful.
Bernier has a $2 million payout on July 1. His salary is basically half to any team that acquires him after July 1. But would still hold the cap hit for a team wanting to get to the cap floor.
Holding on to Lupol makes sense for the expansion draft.
No real reason to keep Bozak. Just doesn't make sense for TML. Useful player with good contract. Just not in the long term plans for the Leafs. |

fair... what about trading a prospect like percy along with him to make it happen?
people on bad deals get moved pretty frequently... it just depends on what the team trying to move the player is willing to pay to ship him out

I will grant you that we may be able to Clarkson Lupul - we should start looking into teams that have an uninsured, injured guy on the books.
No franking way a team would take Lupul for $3.5 million.
Seriously, the guy is just waaaaaaay too unreliable for any team to want him.
And it hurts me to say this, because I am (or at least was) a Lupul fan.
But frank, he's an anchor right now. |

Poop, really?
OK, this fills me with a little bit of hope.
I'd probably just prefer having him as a backup, unless we can get the classic 35 year old backup (who can actually stop a puck). |

oh dont get me wrong i like lupul... and i dont disagree with you one bit
but i do think he is movable... but it would be 100% based on what the leafs are willing to pay to move him
if the leafs looked at one of the 8 teams currently below the cap floor and offered a prospect that has become buried in the leafs system (why i mentioned percy) and their second rounder a team would be hard pressed not to make that deal |
