Only knock I have on Reimer is his limited number of games per season. I think the most he's played in is around 36. Could he keep these number up with 60 starts?
- Flames in 6 04

Seriously, it's a hockey game. These guys practice for hours every day. Too much is made of that.

Have heard that question before, if he can play 40, he can play 60, he's a fitness nut, clean livin' guy

Wait, here's a better answer, 40 games in net for the Leafs is more action than a goalie sees in 2 seasons with a real team. In net for San Jose, Reimer could have done his taxes in between shots

Last I heard was that his future was really up in the air. Plus, I didn't think you could trade a player on LTIR?
- Flames in 6 04

I'm pretty sure you can if all parties, including the player agree to it.

So I think Flames should trade for Miller. He is just peaking and is young in goalie years. Would Backlund be enough?

There's my stupid proposal for the day!

You mind giving Rutherford a quick call?
- geta02it

I think he does right by Flower and sends him somewhere like Calgary. A second and prospect is all Calgary will most likely give...I think it gets done unless Fleury decides to let this season play out.

Something to consider if they take dead weight back. A Hartnell would have to waive to not be protected. No thanks.

But...

of all the picks (any team) has, how many turn out that way? The top prospects are the top because they possess something a guy at 95, 125 doesn't. I'd love to know the stat (Tanner?) for how many drafted players even make the NHL...

- geta02it

You could also say how many #3s have turned out much better than #5-7
Then how many 2nd rounders end up being something serviceable.... Or what we could trade with those seconds like a goalie

Again, to repeat what's already been discussed, who the hell else are you protecting? 7 fwd's:
Monahan
Gaudreau
Bennett
Backlund
Frolik
?
?

Who would be worth more to protect? Maybe if Ferland starts being what we all hope he can be. Otherwise, there would be no other top 6 to protect.

Possibles are Ferland (RFA?) or Colborbe (if they show great improvement next yr), Poirier, Shinkaruk, Janko (if they stay up for the allotted games).

Pronger, Savard and Horton were all traded on the LTIR if you need some examples

I think Smid is going to try and come back (at least that's what the media has been led to believe). I hope for his sake and ours that he just stays home and collects his cheque. No use risking his life and his play has really dropped off the map in recent years.

Shink and janko are exempt so they would be protected ...poirier would should not be exempt

You are right on Janko, but I think Shinkaruk is subject to. 2 yrs in the A, this is his 3rd yr as a pro.

Bah ha ha ha. True story

I'm of the opinion that we should go after Reimer or sign Ramo for another season and then concentrate on filling the gap on right wing this year. It's a young team and probably another year or two away from making some real noise. Who knows, without the BS drama around the 3 man net that we had this year, Ramo might shine. Then sign Ortio as the back-up. Either way I think Ortio should be given a 1 or 2 year deal to be the back-up, I'm not ready to give up on him yet.

Sounds right to me. So basically we would have 2 spots to protect whoever is the best out of Shink, Poirier and Coborne if we traded for Hartnell. I'd probably protect Hartnell even if we weren't forced to, he still has value.

This is pretty much sink or swim for Poirier and Shink this year, either they prove they belong in the NHL or they make the decision on which one we protect easy on us.

What about Reimer and Ramo (if his recovery is going good of course)? Let Ortio walk or deal his rights. Ramo has zero leverage in negotiations this year so we should be able to get him fairly cheap on a 1 or 2 year deal. Both goalies are more of a 1b option, so in that way it kind of makes sense.

... but I am really sick of the whole "goalie battle" narrative we've had the last few years...and Ramo does seem to play better when he is just givin the reins outright.

My reasoning is we get out of that huge contract and can spend the dough elsewhere.....no offense to Gio but our D prospects are pretty stacked!

players dont stay on LTIR after the season is done. They can be traded in the offseason and be put back on LTIR before training camp deadline to be cap compliant

That's a mighty big asset to lose for nothing. If that's what the Flames might think, then it'd be better to trade him before his NTC kicks in.
