19 voters had him outside of the top 3 another 4 had him outside of the top 5.

Even if all of those were 1st place votes it is unlikely Karlsson would have won. If you took the 4th 5th and outside and made them 1st he would have has 1250 points. Doughty had 1254. I suppose it is likely he would have gone down some as many of those 23 probably had Doughty 1st, but it is what it is.

I think having Karlsson outside of the top 3 is a bit of a disgrace as a hockey writer, but I'd say the same of those that voted Doughty outside of the top 3...Francois Beauchemin got voted. THAT is just wrong headed.

Poor Karlsson. This much talent and he got rob by a popular contest. Also, SENS are so far from contending, he's just wasting his prime here.

For all the talk about Duchene, it's interesting to compare the last 2 full seasons played by Turris and Duchene in terms of production (i.e. not including Turris' injury-laden season from last year)...
Player A - 158GP, 51G, 63A, 114Pts, 18:35TOI
Player B - 164GP, 50G, 72A, 122Pts, 18:57TOI

Many seem to feel that one is a bona fide #1 centre, while the other is not - yet in this comparison, Player B is actually Turris. This isn't to say that I'm against the idea of trading for Duchene, but I don't think the perceived upgrade factor is nearly as significant as it's being made out to be.

Personally, I would say that if Zibanejad and the #12 pick wasn't enough to get a deal done for Duchene, then you pass.

Last year, 27 writers had him outside the top 3, (with EIGHT 5th place votes) but no one talked about it cause he won.

Either 8 writers retired, or they actually decided to sit down and watch him play last season.

Now that Doughty has won his lifetime achievement award, EK is going to go something like 5 for 7 in the next years. Just watch.

Turris is either underrated or overrated. IMO if we had 2 Kyle Turrises on our team, we'd be set down the middle (even without Zibanejad).

Hoffman - Turris - Ryan
MacArthur - Turris2 - Stone

I personally feel that Doughty is one hell of a defenceman, who dominates games, and deserved to win the Norris trophy for the past year.
Karlsson had a great year but I thought that he tried to push things offensively too much which resulted in a large number of high risk chances against.
That's my $0.02.

The hockey press posted today saying the Sens were in on taking on the Marian Hossa contract from the Sens.

Hossa is under contract for another 5 years. That brings him to 42 years old. His production took a big dip last year, but he still seems to be effective if he can avoid injury.

That being said, the names mentioned that the Hawks want back are either Pageau or Lazar.

Lazar I might be okay with, but I wouldn't do a straight up trade of Pageau for Hossa. Hossa peaks at about 60 points if he can get healthy. That is more than Pageau right now...and Pageau may never even reach 60 points in a season. However, he is trending up and Hossa is trending down. Pageau is far less expensive, and the Hossa contract takes him to a point where it is unlikely he will be nearly as effective.

$5.25M is a lot of money to be paying a guy in his 40s who is coming off injury. How effective will Hossa be now, and how risky is it that he will be injured again?

if they send anything more than a 2nd rd pick for Hossa then i'm starting to cheer for another team.

he is starting to regress very fast, at this point i don't think i'd put him in our top six. i'm certainly not sending good young players to chicago for what is essentially a salary dump.
