if vesey signs and you draft a lw, no reason to protect kane IMO
- homiedclown

Bad asset management to not protect him. Especially considering the drafted LW will be exempt as well as Vesey.

Kopitar is a superior player.

I thiink the main disagreement here is what the line is. Stamkos is an elite yet limited player. He isn't Kopitar or Toews or Kane. We regularly see teams screw themselves down the line for overpaying guys. There are lessons to be learned in that.

- Slump Buster

IS he available?

No?

Oh Ok, who is the best player available to help us score goals, we should get him.

Kopitar is a superior overall player...Stamkos is a superior goal scorer...

Teams screw themselves when they overpay the wrong player I.E Ville Leino, David Clarkson, etc

if he hits ufa 12 months after expansion draft, they would be better off protecting 4 d men

would you rather have 1 more year of kane, or many years of mccabe?

I want a cup contending team, not a good team, two different levels. Stamkos doesn't allow us to get to the cup contending level, in my opinion.

You're implying that there isn't a salary line that one should not cross. Many here think the line is 9 - 10. Going 2 mill above that is rough.

You can still protect Kane and 4 D:

ROR, Stamkos, Kane, one of Larsson, Girgensons, Ennis, Foligno (if some of them aren't traded).

That leaves Moulson, Gionta exposed...big deal

You protect McCabe, Risto, Bogo and hopefully a new D that is on their way here like Fowler

Eichel, Reinahart, Vesey, Bailey, Fasching are all exempt from being selected

The market says otherwise. Market is set at 10MM MINIMUM

I'm sorry but what does that 2M get us or stop us from getting? 2M is a cap casualty of the Foligno variety. A 4th line player that you now have to replace with a rookie on an ELC. I'd rather take the superstar and lose the plug.

I'm just saying, if you're okay with 10 and not 12 just because you think there's some line I feel like you're grasping at straws. The cap will (most likely) go up or stay the same for the next 7 years, players like Moulson and Gorges and Gionta will fall off, and there are ways to work the cap. In my opinion you go for it.

There are fools that will pay him 12+ mill. That doesn't mean that we should pay him that.

PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: Jenn Menendez reports Penguins GM Jim Rutherford said there’s no truth to a rumor that emerged yesterday claiming the Chicago Blackhawks were interested in acquiring center Evgeni Malkin. “None. We’re not looking to move him. I did not get an inquiry from any team,” Rutherford said. Malkin also has a full no-movement clause, but Rutherford said he’s not a trade option regardless of his trade clause.

Ehhh... I think you still have to protect him because whoever we draft is exempt.

I have a feeling that if Kane can stay healthy he will pot 25+ this year. I really do.

I think ROR, Eichel, Kane, and Reinhart all pot 25 this year.

I never said I was good with 10. Players will always come and go during the length of a contract - that is the same for anyone. You still need to replace them and you still need other good players. I think it would be a mistake to pay this particular player that kind of cash.

Do some people understand if star players hit free agency like Crosby, Kane and etc they would likely getting paid more than Stamkos is

so stop comparing the cap number to Stamkos

I'd rather trade Kane if he wasn't a part of the long term plan. You can't just let a 26/7 y/o top 6 power forward with great possession skills walk for nothing. It's awful asset management. You don't protect players with little trade value. No one can really estimate who will be on the protection list until next season is over. There will be a few player turnovers between now and then.

Offer Stamkos the max $14.3m....for 1 year. Convince him to come and see if he likes it and if the team gels understanding that if all is good we will then extend him for the full 8 years with a very good salary. If it doesn't work out, he will be traded at the deadline to the team of his choice or able to walk at the end of the season. No long term commitment being signed to a team and not having work out plus still young enough to capitalize next summer.

If it doesn't work out, offer Benn $12m next year. Better fit for the team being a LW.
