It's pretty funny, I've seen Andersen play a lot of games - the guy is huge, and has a ton of battle in him. It's simply a scenario where Anaheim has 2 great goalies and Andersen was going to cost them 5 million or so and they already have Gibson signed at a very reasonable contract. They need the money for some forward talent, it's a great trade for the Leafs and a good one for Anaheim stocking up a couple picks for something they really didn't need with only so much cap space available.
Great move by Lou. - Lucas.Neilson

Assuming Robidas and Horton are off the Cap then the Leafs have about 60 million committed to 14 forwards, 4 dmen, and 2 goalies (plus buyouts and retained $).
They've got about 11.5 to play with and need to re-sign 3 young inexpensive dmen.
And about 22 million in 'final year' contracts. - The Law
Bernier's salary will be off the books before training camp. Lou will ship him out for sure. Bozak will likely be traded , the toughest part will be Lupul. When healthy he can be a solid player, that cap hit though - needs to be moved. |

They really only have 58 Million with the Cowen buy out and Greening is going to be in the AHL (about 800K will be off the books) so that gives about 58 Million.
The majority of the 22 million in final year contracts are from Laich, Michalek Greening and Bernier. That total in 16 million. At least that's good news. |

I just googled that. Never heard of that particular place, but oh yeah baby, peri peri chicken, I'll take that all the way to town. Say what you want about the Portuguese, the sons of female doges know spicy flame broiled chicken. I'm going. - Zezel
So so so good. They're popping up all over the place. There's one in Barrie near their new Burgers Priest. |

The Leafs will probably keep him, and he will start 25 games or so. - BetterCallSaul
move Bernier with perhaps 1.5 - 2.0 million retained for whatever mid-range pick or prospect you can get.
this opens the 2nd goaltending position for an experiment (sign Finnish World Championships goalie) or play one of Bibeau or the AllSpark.
the reason for the suggestion is :
1) I just want Bernier gone
2) even if he stands on his head (and let's face it he won't)... that provides no opportunity to the young guys to establish themselves as NHL caliber goalies and for what payback Bernier gets a 3rd rounder back instead of a 4th or 5th?
retain some salary and give him back to Burke for half salary and 3rd pick |

Since when is two 2nds (pretty much what this is) for a good goalie that has played his fair share of games a bad trade?
I seem to remember Anders Lindback going for the same price - I'll take Andersen thank you very much.
Edit: Bernier (sorry guys). Even though he had more of a backup role. |

I don't like trading high picks, and I don't love the automatic 5 year term, but those are what the deal required. I understand that moves like this are necessary to keep the Leafs from fading back in to obscurity. |

Rob Vollman @robvollmanNHL
That's a lot of $ for Andersen. Over 3 yrs, ranks:
13th by Quality Start Pct%
23rd by SV%
25th by Adj SV%
26th by home plate SV%
26th by xGS
Rob Vollman @robvollmanNHL
Andersen's value inflated by goal support of 3.11 (3rd in NHL), and facing especially soft opponents.
Rob Vollman @robvollmanNHL
I used to study the avg shooting pct% of teams goalies assigned to face. Only one goalie was facing noticeably easier opponents: Andersen.

Agree.
Bernier needs to get Phaneuf'ed from the Leafs.
He's nothing but bad influence / bad memories.

this is a bi-product of the "rules" that apply to Leaf fans and Leaf reporting in general.
examples:
1) a late Leaf 1st rounder is really more of a 2nd round pick - other teams a 1st round pick is actually a 1st round pick
2) a goalie with more or less two years of being a 1A becomes more a back-up when acquired by the Leafs
3) prospects that are property of other teams have high upsides - which mysteriously degrade the moment they are acquired by the Leafs
4) and the biggest more obvious example April 15th - Auston Matthews genuinely viewed by all ranking/rating agencies analysts etc as the defacto #1 pick - Leafs win draft lottery and INSTANTLY other prospects values rise.

Leafs receive a $650K cap credit this year for Cowen's buyout. Greening played well (15 points in 30 games) enough to be moved without penalty if that's what they want, or he can be a fourth liner. |

When I see Andersen, I see Reimer v2.0. (a bit better and more consistent than Reimer)
Nothing wrong with that; I liked Reimer.
Andersen is in the area of 12-25 NHL goalies.
He's not top10 / elite though.
BUT he seems like a stable and good guy with consistency.
Leafs should get rid of Bernier (Calgary / Arizona / Nashville) and sign Reimer to a 2mln/2y contract end of September. (I doubt Reimer will get the a 4mln+ multi-annual contract he's looking for) |

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Marner is done with junior hockey, or at least he should be. He's too good for junior:
Carter Comeau @ComeauCarter11
@TSNBobMcKenzie is marner big enough and ready to play in the NHL next year? If not, wouldn't it be ridiculous for him to play in OHL again - burn
let him play 9 games or whatever at the beginning of the season.... then demote or bench him or whatever its called - until the WJC... send him to that.
